Default What do u guys think of a 04 2500 4x4 cummins?

Hey guys i am thinking of looking at a 04 2500 qc 4x4 cummins with 80,000 miles on it.I think they want 22,000 for it.I am wanting to switch over from a 05 f250 crew cab with the 5.4 gas.She just dosen't have enough power when i tow my 30 ft travel trailer.Which i don't do too often but when i do man that little gas motor just screams keeping it at 70 lol.I mean probably about 4500 to 4800 rpm's.The truck tows it great but the power is just not there and i know a diesel will do it no problem. But being i don't tow that much with it i could live with i guess but the fuel ecomny is horrible cause i use it as a daily driver i get roughly 10-11 mpgs and maybe 13 with a tail wind on the highway. So instead of looking at all the posts on here for awhile what do u guys think that 04 would get mpg wise as a daily driver about 50 percent city and 50 percent highway? Also is it a good idea to drive as a daily driver when sometimes i only have a few miles to go from my house? And also everyone i have talked to told me to get the cummins it is bullet proof compared to getting a powerstroke. My father in law has a 01 cummins and swears by it but his tranny needs to get replaced and he has a 125,000 on it is that normal also?

auto trannies behind the 5.9 are mediocre at best. There are aftermarket transmissions that will last longer though. I average 16-17 combined going to work and home plus a few hours on the freeway over about 520 miles, but I've got a 6.7 and 6-speed auto.

$22K seems a bit steep but if it's in good condition it might be ok.

I purchased my 07.5 with the 6.7L and all of the deletes for 18K about a year ago with 100K miles. I do think I got a pretty good deal on it though

The 5.9 does pretty good as a daily driver in terms of mileage. my dad has one an he gets 19mpg on the highway.

I love mine. I get around 15 mpg around town and around 14 to 16 towing a 2 place snowmobile trailer up north. I believe what hurts me around town is that I have 3.73 gears and 35" tires. I had a 3500 with 4.10's and 35' tires and I got around 17 around town. My opinion is that I would never own another diesel without 4.10's.
