HELP.... truck quit on interstate
truck details in sig,
we were on interstate yesterday and you could hear the clatter of the motor cut in and out every couple seconds, but could still hear the turbo whine.
i decided to pull off and see what is wrong, but once it slowed enough that it down shifted and once on idle it died. then would not start again.
my buddy came by [thank god] and looked it over, we had to prime the fuel system, and he said it had a lot of air in it. had to use started fluid in it to get it to start, then bleed the fuel rail.
so the question is, how does it get air in the system? now that it is bleed, will we have the same issue again? what causes it?

agree lift pump most likely cause also check the fuel injector connectors, thats were the lines from the fuel rail go into the head there is a large nut there they can come loose over time and cause airation the system is self bleading if you dont run it out of fuel its not like an old twelve valve were u have to crack all the lines. Worst case scenario your IP is toast you can check it by pulling the feed line from pump to rail off at the rail put a hose on the end into a measuring cup crank for 30 seconds you should get at least 100ml if not its done but check it last but fuel supply from tank to pump has to be good first

the gauge works fine and the truck seems to run fine, but i am afraid of letting it run down to that last 1/4 of a tank again fearing that i may run out.
when the truck died, you could hear it cut in and out like it was running out of fuel.
i was able to coast to a gas station just off interstate (lucky me). we filled it up, and then bled lines and i have not had any issues with it since, but again i will fill up when the tank reaches the half way point....that is kind of a PITA.

Well i'm guessing your problem is either your lift pump going bad, or you have a modified sending unit. My lift pump went bad on me awhile back and I ended up installing a raptor 100 lift pump. But my truck had already been converted from the lift pump on the back of the filter housing to the in-take pump. Which I then had to modify my sending unit, I choose a vulcan 5 draw straw. But now I have the problem of of getting between 1/2 and 1/4 and it work suck fuel so I have to fill up quite often. But if it just started doing it i'd say its your lift pump.
