Default ran out of fuel

We have a 01 cummins and yesterday on the way to the gas station the truck died. I know we were getting Real close to being empty but the truck died about a block away. As described to me the truck didnt really feel like it ran out of fuel but after dumping in 7 gallons..NOTHING. we filled the fuel filter with fuel. tried bleeding the fuel lines. but cant seem to get them to bleed.
My question is is there a special way of getting this started again, or is does it sound like the lifter pump, fuel pump or something take sh*t. Thanks for your help guys. Also about 50,000 we did have the upgraded lifter pump? done by dodge.

Running a 24 valve out of fuel is a very bad thing. The injection pumps are weak to begin with and running them out of fuel is a sure fire way of killing one. Since it was ran dry, cycle the key to the run position and off about 15-20 times to try and prime the system again. If it does not fire after that try cycling the key another 10-20 times and try to start it again. If still no fire, you most likely took out the injection pump. You can pull the codes by turning the ignition switch to the run and off position 3 times in a row, last time leaving it in the run position. The truck will show the codes in the odometer display. Let me know what comes up.
