Default Newbee with 6.7 emmision questions

Yo.
Im sure there is a thread here about this, somewhere. I appreciate your help.

I have owned a 06 3500 Lariat, 5.9, all dolled up since new...67k miles, absolutely no problems except, I am using it for work truck (a really nice work truck, too nice). Towing 10-14k loads often, in traffic, I fear the 4 speed auto and 3.73 gears are at their limits. Im shopping for a dually rig now.

Found a 08 Dually 6.7 with 26k miles, 6 speed auto. Im waiting for the dealer to confirm the gears. Right now, I assume 3.73s.

MY QUESTION IS: Ive heard the 6.7 stupid power robbing emmissions can be removed &/or replaced with aftermarket, mild chip and this engine rocks! Is this true? I am aware this voids the warrantee, I dont really care about the warrantee or mpg. Will this conversion + the extra gear give me more power than the 5.9?

2012 HO is plan B.

Thanks.

Mike J

First off, Lariat is a Ford, not a Dodge. Get it straight haha!

Why do you say the 4 speed and 3.73s is at their limit? Is the trans acting up? Low on power? Is it stock?

Yes you can fully delete the emissions on a 6.7. However, even mild programming the 68RFE seems to have trouble holding. With the latest transmission tuning, it may be better. Especially with the soon arrival of EFILive tuning for the 6.7 platform.

False.

The 68RFE holds up fine IF the driver doesn't do something stupid.

Drive it like a reasonable person and it'll last just fine with proper maintenance.

With EGR/DPF deletes, intake and 4" turbo back exhaust, and a black maxx programmer my 6.7 makes somewhere in the neighborhood of 500hp/1100lb-ft at the tires, and it took me being stupid and power braking in 4wd to melt the underdrive clutches. No hard parts broke whatsoever, I just nuked the frictions. Pulling a 44000 pound sled across the clay didn't phase it. Towing a 14000+ trailer across the country didn't scare it at all. It was me being retarded with the fuel turned way up that cost me my trans.

My recommendation - if you're not concerned about emissions equipment, do the EGR delete, do a turbo-back 4" exhaust, shim your fuel rail pressure relief valve, slap an S&B intake on it, and get a Black Maxx programmer WITH the Overdrive software, and get an Airdog lift pump/filter. Get a bypass oil filter, run CJ-4+ oil, and run some sort of fuel additive.

Laredo.
Sorry, been a Ford man for many years.
My 03 F-350 Lariat LE (short box dually, 4.10 auto) was stolen 2 years ago and totalled. Really happy with the Dodge.

"Doing something stupid" is subjective here, hehe.
Im towing fairly heavy (12k load) dump trailers off of a barge.
Down the ramp, then up...all slow, so steep, almost high centering the hitch, low range. My fear is the stall after the load is starting up.

Yes, I feel like the 06 tranny is starting to loosen up. No other driver would notice this.

I live in the Country, there are no emmision requirements here.

Thanks for the info Horatio. I have copied and will study it thoroughly.
Looking at an 08 dually, 3.73 gears, posi, 68RFE tranny, 6.7, 27k miles, all stock. It is big horn but has everything my Laredo has except leather and wood dash. Looks like the price difference will be around $10k at this point, need to check emmissions and chip cost. Thanks.

If there is anything you need to know about tugboats...I owe you one.

Laredo is a Jeep

I think Laramie is the term you are looking for. Top of the line Ram.

No problem..

I believe it was about $5k for the programmer, intake, exhaust, egr delete, fuel rail shim, airdog lift pump, and install when I had mine done.

The intake at this power level isn't mandatory - a buddy has a 5.9 with a Smarty, airdog, and I'm not sure but I think he's running 4" into a big stack in his bed, not sure what size. His truck puts out similar power numbers with his factory intake/filter.

I highly recommend the Overdrive transmission software - stock shift points had me in lockup 6th gear by about 45mph. It was lugging bigtime. With the Overdrive remapped trans tuning, it held gears longer so you'd cruise in the sweet spot instead of just off idle.

However, if you're going to get an aftermarket shift kit, you may not be able to run Overdrive. This is the case when running the Suncoast shift kit as you have to run their TCM tuning (or you'll melt your overdrive clutches in about a month... ask me how I know)
