6.7 or 5.9
Im looking at getting a new truck. Well a new used truck. I know both engines have their issues but what do I look for in selecting and what are some of the problems with each. Im looking at something between 2003 and 2007. Since that is the first year 6.7 Im kinda nervous about it.
from what ive heard the 5.9s are pretty bullet proof, 12v a little more than the 24v, but ive heard too many bad things about the 6.7. thats just what ive heard ive got 318 v8 so no expirience here.
I was considering my options just over a year ago. I did a lot of research, and asked on *******ly every forum the same question.
I went with an 06 (Common Rail) 5.9 CTD and I've been super happy with it. My father purchased an 08 6.7 CTD about the same time to replace his Ford. He's spent about 10k on his truck to get it to the same reliability/performance as my stock 5.9! I've added a few things to it since I bought it, but have not had a single problem with the engine. I've had some issues with the electronics in the truck, but very minor overall.
The challenge you'll run into is owners with 5.9's know what they have, and are holding on to them. I bought my truck last year for 30k Canadian, and I'm noticing they are listing for more $$ now than they were a year ago, most of them listing for close to $35K.
Find yourself a nice truck, but don't be too eager to find the right one, the first time you find one... be prepared to wait it out to find the cherry if you can.
