Default 48RE shift questions

I have an 05 ram3500 with the 48re trans. My highway mileage is barely 18 at 70 mph. I changed the oil, filter and adjusted the bands last winter when I bought it. It has about 125000 on it. My question is when you start moving you are in first gear, should I feel 3 or 4 shift points as I speed up. I am getting 3 distinct shift points the last shift seems to feel like a big gear change (really drags the engine down). I am taching about 2200@70MPH. Some times I do get a little shuttle shifting between 1&2 on normal acceleration

Thanks for any info

What ring and pinion ratio and tire size are we talking about here?

18 isn't too bad for a common rail. These things are heavy.

I payed attention to mine today(06 2500 4wd) I really dont feel mine shift from 3rd to 4th but I can really tell when the lock-up converter locks up in 4th. The shift from 3rd to 4th can been seen on the tach, I also watched it on my Edge CTS gauge. So watching the tach I have four distinct shifts, by feeling I only have 3. Hope this helps in what you were looking for.

Thanks
I will retest drive watching the tach. pretty sure I watched it before but no harm in double checking.
I am pretty sure they are std. size tires and when my hoist is open I will check gear ratio. I just felt that 2200rpm was way to high at 70mph.

the plan is to lift (suspension) and put oversize tires on it. but would like to make sure everything is working properly before any mods. I suppose if it does have a extra low gear it will be to my advantage

I just replaced Governor sensor, lock-up and OD solenoids. it seems to shift better but I can still only count 3 shift points, by tach and feel.

I am running the 265 stock tires and it has a 4.10 gear ratio and I am running @2200rpm at 70mph and it is the same in tow/haul

I checked and made sure the #50 fuse was in there and good. I have read were when removing the edge programer some have forgot to replace this and lost OD until replacing it. I just thought of this, tomarrow I will try removing this fuse to confirm no OD

I have read here about putting a mystery switch in for the lock-up but I also read in one post about using the mystery switch to check the OD, any info on this????

You are going into OD. I'm just under 2000 rpm when I'm at 70 mph. I have 3.73 gears. I'm willing to bet you aren't feeling the 1-2 shift. That one happens pretty quick, and it is hard to see on the tach.

Yeah, sorry I didn't get back here last night. pulling the fuse did show that we did have OD. now I need to figure how big I need to go on tires. I would like to get down to 2000RPM @ 70MPH and I don't think 33's will get me there.

What kind of milage do you get at 70 or 80 with the set-up you have and what size tires are you running

I'm running stock 265/75/17 tires. Empty, I get about 16 mpg at 70 mph. I'm usually pulling an 18' long 8.5' wide enclosed trailer. I get 10 mpg. Doesn't matter how heavy it is, drive like grandma, or drive like I stole it.

Thanks for the info. MPG seems to have improved after installing new solenoids and press. switch at least for the around town driveing. and the shifts do feel better. The people that I do know are claiming a lot higher numbers than you but, your's do sound more realistic.

Thanks horatio102 for the calculator info. Looks like 33's will get me in the ballpark and 35's will put me under 2000 rpms at 70 mph
