Default potential cummins buy

hey yall. i ran across a 2001 cummins. its along bed, ext cab, automatic 2wd. work edtion so no bells and whisles. i have my dodge which is a little v6 5 speed. i drive 50-70 miles a day for work and it is literally stop and go. i reach 5th gear three times a night. the stick has been wearing out my knee so i have been wanting an automatic and something that is going to last me more than 6 months without producing a problem. the guy is only asking $7000 which is about $3000 less than the blue book around here. it does have a little over 200k on it though which is why i think it reflects his price. i have not gone to look at it yet. but i was wondering what are something i should look at mechanics wise when i do? and do yall think this would be a good buy? i know the cummins motor is known for its fuel mileage and its high torque rating at low rpms. the mileage is why i want it cause i would come out ahead or the same on my fuel bill considering i only get 10-13 in my truck now.

thanks.

well, cummins is a great motor, and you will love it. i personaly in my opinion like the 12v, but thats me, wat to look for, check the valve cover for oil leaks, check underneith, cummins is a dirty motor but use common sense on how dirty it should be, lol oil does collect on the bottom, i havnt seen a cummins without it, but just use common sense, check allllll hoses, wireing, if you got wires all over creation, look like theyve been messed with, make sure all hoses are good, ask if he has changed any of the fuel pumps, cause i know around those years the pumps went bad or somethin, my dad has a 02 24v and he had to get all new pumps and everything else, 4700 worth of stuff because it went bad. just be careful and check as much as possible, and everyone else out there help him out, theres lots more people smarter then me. just my .02 good luck, ohhhhh and on the 200k mileage, thats not to much, cummins arnt broken in till around 150k anyways, so your in good shape. just keep up on the oil changes and all that good stuff.

thanks bud. i went and drove it yesterday and to me it seems to drive fine. no pull or anything but the only other cummins ive driven was a built pull truck so i have no other stock cummins to compare power to and what not. i will have someone look at it after i do to double check. i also found out that it belonged to Louisiana DEQ (Department of environmental quality) there is no goodneck or 5th wheel hitch and are not holes for ether. if i get approved for a loan tomorrow which i should ima gonna go to one of the good shops around here and get them to look over it with me. and the dash is only cracked in one spot which is good for something thats almost 11 years old and is a dodge

Default 2001 Dodge

I had a 2001 2500 with 104k that I just traded last summer for a 2004.5 because I wanted a bit more towing power. My 2001 served me very well with only a transmission rebuild at 93k. The weak links in the 1998.5-2002 24v motors were the OEM lift pumps and injector pumps. Also many had the dreaded ''53'' block motors that cracked in maybe 10% of those blocks. Most cracked in the first 100k with many replaced on warranty but a few cracked with higher miles usually under 200k. You can check your block by looking on the driver's side at the front corner just above the pan for numbers about 1 1/2 inches high. Mine had a ''53'' but no problems. If there is another number as in 54 or 55 or no number no problem.
