Looking at switching to a Cummins
I am looking at trading in my 2009 RAM 1500 4x4 Hemi Crew TRX Off-Road with 61,xxx miles for a new 2012 RAM 1500 Cummins (Big Horn, 4x4, auto, 3.73 LSD) thats pretty well loaded up at $54,790. With employee pricing and rebates I could save $13,721 off the sticker price with my trade in. The are offering me $21,000 on my trade in that was negotiated up from $18,500. I have about $5600 in equity in the trade in.
Does this seem like enough for my trade in? Very good condition no issues, all scheduled maintenance done, gets 16-17 mpg combined average.
Does this seem like a good purchase price for a 2012?
Pro's vs. Con's?

If its a 1500 cummins definately go for it no matter what the price.
$22,800 is the NADA value for a clean trade in value of your truck so your pretty close on that. The invoice for a new 2500 is around $46k depending on your location. So it looks like your in the ballpark pricewise. The Hemi is an awesome engine, Ive had 3 of them, but the Cummins is in a class all to its own. Prepare to take a hit in fuel economy, but the power gain is beyond beleif; especially in the 6.7HO.

Con`s = you better have a big FAT wallet to keep up with JUST the maint.
If you`re planning on using it mainly for a daily driver and not tow with it very often, you`ll regret owning it. (the mpg suck) You`ll also have to beat the crap out of it for 50,000 miles just to break it in. These kinds of trucks are NOT cost effective. So if you`re just going to buy it for the sake of having a diesel truck to brag about, keep the hemi, you`ll be glad you did... but if you have money to just pizz away, buy it. Your 09 has a lifetime drivetrain warranty, this new 2012 does not. Tires will also cost you a great deal more as well for this 2012 2500 cummins. (and trust me, they EAT tires) Diesel fuel will cost ALOT more. Diesels are made for hard work, if thats your intent, then buy it.
Oh and by the way, they dont make a 1500 with a cummins diesel in it.
Only the 3/4 ton 2500 on up ram is available with a cummins diesel engine.
The 1500 is a 1/2 ton pick up, biggest engine available is the 5.7 hemi engine.

Yeah yeah, I think way faster than I can type and got the info confused. You knew what I meant though atleast.
Anyways I picked her up on Wednesday, she's black & chrome and full of torque. My dealership worked out a deal with another dealership to transfer her from Cincinatti, OH to Metro Detroit, MI.
Seems to be less in cab noise than my 2004 5.9L was though. Got about 490 miles on it and the vehicle info center shows 16.8-17.0 MPG during drives to work city/highway so far.

If you are not going to be towing 75% of the time don't buy one do to all of the EPA smog junk that lowers fuel mileage and other problems, now if you don't want a warranty then you can delete the EPA smog junk and have a good truck that can get 15-18 mpg empty.
As for it taking 50,000 miles to break in the engine that BS, I had my 2006 broke in under then 6K and was using 5w40 synthetic oil at 7500 miles and to date its not using any oil nor has it had any engine problems, as for tires yes HD trucks are harder on them then a 1500 do to thew extra weight of the truck and the extra weight they can tow and I have gotten 60K on the factory tires not bad from a truck that weighs in at 7400 lbs empty. FYI a truck with duel rear wheels does have greater tire wear then a single rear wheel truck.
