Default Lower engine gaskets

I have a 2001 2500 and there is oil caked on the lower front of the engine with fresh oil on the bottom. I was thinking of just replacing everything on the bottom of the engine. It has 350,000+ miles. How big of a job is it?

Never had to do it but from what i have heard you have to unbolt the engine and raise it up in order for the oil pan to clear a crosssbrace on a 4x4 and i think you might have to drop the trans on a 2wd.

could just be the puke bottle on the front spewing everywhere...when is the last time you emptied it? suppose to drain it every oil change...

(puke bottle = PCV catch bottle on the front of the engine)

I just bought the truck and this is my first Dodge with a diesel. I will find the puke bottle in the morning.

its the most likely cause of an oil mess. not many people empty them out like they are suppose to (myself included) and whenever you go down a steep hill oil can seep out of the pcv and fill that bottle. when it overflows, the radiator fan blows it all over the place and makes a big frikken mess.

stupid place to put a PCV in my opinion, and if you take it to a dealer to address the issue (while still under warranty) they will actually replace the tappet cover on the drivers side of the block behind the injection pump, with a vented tappet cover, and relocate the PCV to the side of the block which eliminates the problem of oil coming up the timing gears on the front of the motor and out the PCV.

mine also makes a big mess whenever I jump into the throttle hard and hit 65psi boost.. excess crank case pressure from that makes oil mist blow out the pcv. (my front axle and steering is a huge oil soaked mess)

Jigabop do you mean that thing down there covered in old oil. The hose runs down to what looks like the hose just gets bigger. I have not cleaned the caked up oil off yet but how do you drain the oil out.

Can I do the dealer upgrades myself?

yep, that big bulb lookin thing at the bottom of the hose is the puke bottle.

Looks like this when its cleaner...

Clean it up and you will see how to take it off...just dump it out and put it back on..

and you could do the upgrade yourself, but it is a very involved project. involves removing the injection pump, fuel filter assembly, radiator shroud, fan, washer bottle... you gotta dig into it a ways to get to that tappet cover.

here's the TSB on it: http://articles.mopar1973man.com/2nd...kcase-breather

you could also just run a longer hose so it drains behind the axle, or run the hose into the fame so it puts some anti-rust protection on the frame hehe

Run it into the fuel tank and burn it with the price of diesel.
