Hello there ! I recently acquired a 1999 2500 4x4 5speed manual 5.9 diesel truck . Most of the time when I start the truck the engine will surge and hold at high rpm until I kill the ignition. When the engine does start and idle correctly it wont accelerate to over 1500 rpms. Occasionally but rarely the motor will run fine..?? Ive put fresh batteries , fuel filter and fuel pump relay on. Any ideas?

 

What's your fuel pressure? Get a fuel pressure gauge on it ASAP. Also check your battery cable ends for corrosion at both ends, where it attaches to the battery and where the other ends terminate (block, starter, etc). Disconnect and test your batteries individually. Just because they're new doesn't mean there can't be a problem.

 

Any smoke when it starts?
