Have owned my dodge now for two years. It's a 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 quad cab SLT 4x4. Has the 5.9l cummins with the auto trans. The truck is lifted with 6" BDS suspension, 3" body and sits on 37" Nitto's. I have recently done a trip into a pass where I was hauling a tent trailer of all things. The truck climbed in temp on both the bully dog programmer and truck gauges. It hit from 195 at bottom of hill to 245 at top and went into full limp mode incl trans. Truck lost power so pulled over and waited to cool down. This has been a consistent issue with this truck with even the slightest of loads. I have had the trans flushed and new filter. The rad flushed and new coolant. A new thermostat and water pump (but heard a water pump can be faulty and not spin properly also) installed flex-a-lite dual 15" electric fans. I cannot figure out what is causing the temp to spike on up hill driving and especially with loads. I have contacted numerous dealers in regards to the issue, but no success. Any help or insight would be appreciated!

having same issue with 2003. being lead to believe it is an electrical issue. let me know if you find out anything. wouldn't it be nice if the dealerships could help?

 

Yes, they seem to not release information, but ask to diagnose the truck. Haha money in their pockets and outa mine. I just have chased it for awhile and now it seems to be getting worse. I know it's something! The truck will be at the dealership to check the head gasket this Wednesday. I hope something comes from that.

I had my head gasket replaced. i am having my PCM checked. last time it overheated the fan never kicked on but now it is. mine seems to be intermittent but having different issues affecting torque converter and turn signals. my turn signals only work when my lights are on. if they come up with something let me know. last dealership said my engine was bad. Taking it to a diesel specialist though after i have the dealer check my pcm.

 

have them check to see if your torque converter is locking up properly, mine went from engine overheating, to a new ac condenser, then trans overheating, now back to engine overheating, wouldn't hurt to have them check the pcm or whatever computer module it is that controls cooling.
