Default Hopefully buying '06-'07 cummins...need help

I'm looking to buy an 06-07 5.9 Megacab 4x4.Is there anything I should look out for when looking at trucks? I want something very reliable as I travel long distances and don't want to get stranded thousands of miles from home. Are there any engine, trans or suspension issues I should be concerned with or anything I should upgrade immediately after aquiring a truck? I know that when buying a 12 valve, odometer reading means nothing, does the same hold true for the common rail 5.9? Should I stay away from a higher mileage truck? I currently have a 98 12v 4x4 and couldn't be happier with its reliability (other than having to deal with front suspension issues). Thanks

If you're looking for reliability, I'd steer away from any truck that has had a programmer on it. Increased rail pressures lead to cracked injectors, which cost a lot more than on a 12 valve. If you're looking for an automatic, it's got basically the same issues as the older truck - Dodge cheaped out on the internals and torque converter, wagering that they'd make it outside of warranty for the bulk of buyers.

Is there any way of telling if a programmer has been used other than the obvious( mounting holes, adhesives etc). Is the G56 a good transmission? Thanks for the response.

I'm not up on my manual trannies, but I believe the G56 is perfectly fine, but I also think it was used with the dual mass flywheel setup, which is junk. Swap it out for a good dual disc clutch setup and it's ok.

as far as programmers go, you'd just have to look for the tell tale wiring hacks and holes in the dash/firewall
