Default Dead Pedal, skipping, on 24V

2001 with 6 speed HO 245 with 200,100mi. :

Ok so this is really nerve racking. Had a 0216 code with dead pedal a few months ago and it got worse and worse. Started right up but I decided it was the death code. SO, I installed a brand new VP44 with new 1/2 lines and new 18psi lift pump and did away with the banjo fittings. Everything is 1/2" all the way to the filter and from filter right to the IP.

Idled fine, and within 10 minutes of driving I get the F$#ing dead pedal thing again. When it does, the FP remains exactly the same. Its 18 at idle and 16 to 17 at WOT on the road with a load. No codes showing yet. Plus it skips or 'pops' once its warmed up to full temps. I did not install a new APS but I did reset it by unplugging both batteries and slowly pushing down and back up on accel. pedal a few times that route.

I checked and rechecked all lines and every thing looks good. The keyway on the pump was installed correctly at the 12'O clock position, etc.
I've installed 2 of these pumps and not as much problems as this truck is giving me.

I DO have a new APS that I never put in,should I do that and see what happens or just WHAT is going on?

Should I bring it to a reliable Cummins mechanic who really knows their S$#it?

I thought I'd be Golden with all new lines, an 18psi Lift Pump and the brand new IP. It IS the correct IP for the truck I already checked.

I seriously don't get it. What ELSE should I check or do? Grounds? Electrical?

it wouldn't matter if you put a standard output vp44 in there. shouldn't have those issues. in fact most people with HO trucks switch to a SO vp44 because the SO pump can significantly increase power (by 100hp+ depending on modifications) when using electronic power adders...

it is possible you got a bad IP...did it come with any warranty?

you can try the apps, but an apps will throw a CEL immediately if dead pedal occurs.

Put the new apps in, same thing. Dead pedal within 5 minutes of driving. But today, I drove it 10 miles with no dead pedal.
NO codes appear.

sounds like you may have gotten a bad replacement vp44. Most of the cheaper rebuilds only replace the part that failed, and send them out again. not many replace all components unless you pay a lot of money for that type of pump which usually costs 2x as much...

Here is how to reset your apps.....

APPS Reset Procedure
This procedure has shown to help 24 valve ISB engines. It is basically teaching the fly by wire accelerator on these trucks to reread the position of the pedal and it's limits. Most complaints this will help with is poor acceleration, improper shifting, bucking in 5 and 6 speeds. Has been known to increase fuel mileage in some instances.

1. Set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cables on both batteries
3. Turn ignition key to run(to drain any remaining capacitors)
4. Let truck sit for 30 minutes( this is the recommended minimum)
5. Return ignition to OFF position
6. Reconnect both batteries and secure, not a timed event
7. Turn key to run position(not start) and depress accelerator pedal slowly all the way to the floor
8. Allow pedal to return to top position slowly
9. Turn ignition switch OFF
10.Release parking brake

PO 0216- injection pump timing control malfunction

This code is also known to be thrown when you have an issues with engine position sensor thats located behind the VP44 in the back of the front engine timing cover. They are a PIA to swap out but could also be the root of your issues. However,I would reset the apps first and see what you that does first.......Andy

What tuners are you running if any? If you stack two tuners they can make a dead pedal effect.
