FASS DRP Pump
I just installed a FASS DRP lift pump on my 2002 Dodge Cummins. It had the original lift pump on it (dealer intank replacement was never installed).
By looking at the installation instructions, it looks like they want you to install it with an upstream (between the tank and LP) filter. I assume it is actually a strainer to keep debris from the inlet of the pump. They say that this filter needs to be replaced every 6 months.
This filter mounts inline using hose clamps and its recommended location is nearly impossible to get to for regular maintenance. That seems like a cheap and dirty fix to issues they’ve had with the inlet banjo fitting strainers they supplied previously. I would prefer something more substantial. In addition, you are just adding one more restriction on the suction of the pump. What have others done? Installed it or left it off?
I am wondering if any one has any recommendations on a more permanent installation for a prefilter that could be installed below on the frame or anywhere more accessible.
Or what your thoughts are on replumbing so that the stock filter/water separator is upstream of the lift pump, instead of between the LP and the injector pump? This eliminates any additional restrictions, but might make it harder to prime? Any thoughts?
Thanks for the help..

I would just get a filter base and put a spin on water separator/pre-filter in line infront of the lift pump.
somewhat similar to what airdog and fass use. a 100 micron pre-filter water separator that keeps stuff that could damage the lift pump out of it, but smaller stuff that is no threat to the lift pump can pass through it and will get caught by the 2 micron fuel filter that is post-lift pump.
