Lost prime in my diesel
I have a 95 5.9 diesel. Parked it on a hill facing up hill for a week or so. Went to start it and it sputtered and then just turned over. Never had a problem before with this. It was parked with very little fuel in it. Towed it to level ground and it seems that I lost fuel prime. I tried to prime it with the button after putting more fuel in it and there is fuel leaking from the button area on my fingers. Try try try but I cannot get this thing primed or running again. Can you hep me?
First add fuel to the tank. If you arent able to prime you will probably need to disconnect the discharge line from the lift pump then prime it, or turn it over.
If you have fuel at your lift pump:
Crack your fuel lines before the injectors. (should only need to crack 3). The just bump the starter to turn the engine over, do that until fuel starts to squirt out of the injector lines. Then tighten them back down and it should start up, rev it up though to get the fuel flowing because itll be running a little rough at first.

Thanks for the response. Haven't had a chance to remove discharge line. Do you think that the leak in the lift pump is the cause for the loss of prime? I have pumped that primer button like crazy and have gotten nothing though it is creating a bit of vacuum as I can see it at the bleeder screw on top of the fuel filter. Also am I supposed to be able to hear the lift pump running when I bump the starter? I have a feeling that the lift pump is sucking air from the leaky primer button. Again, on level ground I haven't had any issues with starting or running! Maybe I should just replace it and then continue. What do you all think? Thank you in advance!!!
Maybe use an air compressor and blow air into the fuel tank while your cranking the engine over. Force the fuel up.
Use a rag and an air blower. Use very little pressure. It works.
I've done it before.
Use too much pressure and you'll know quick.

I highly doubt that you'll hear a mechanical lift pump running as you bump the starter - it is actuated by a lobe on the camshaft, so it only works when the engine is actually spinning. It's not like an electric pump on newer rigs that will run for a few seconds after bumping the starter.
If you have fuel leaking *anywhere* in the fuel supply or return system, air will get into it and you'll lose prime. If your primer is leaking, that is definitely a problem. Fix that first...

Thank you gentlemen and sorry for the delay. It was a leak in the lift pump. Replaced it with a stock one from genoa garage and used the sir compressor trick which worked great and the truck runs great. I appreciate the help greatly.
