2008 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 - Warning Light for Service 4x4 and trans will not engage

2008 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 - Warning Light for Service 4x4 and trans will not engage
Yesterday on 7/1/15 This vehicle was driving normal and it started shifting into 4x4 on its own and then a warning light reads "service 4x4 soon".
Today the vehicle would not shift into gear but makes no noise.
I checked the transmission and transfer case fluids and they are all full.
I am assuming this is some type of problem with a electrical module but my engine scanner is sitting in a storage unit 350 miles away.
What can I check?

Unless your scanner will talk to the transmission, you'll probably only get a P0700 out of it.
So without that, I'd start looking at wiring from the trans, xfer case, back to the end of the wires.
You can try unhooking your batteries and letting the memory clear, but you'll just make it that much more difficult for whichever shop ends up with it.
