Very new to the diesel world but long time Ram owner. Getting ready to pick up a new 2015 2500 with a G56 manual. I've been reading a lot online and on the forum about diesel additive to boost cetane numbers for better cold weather starts, etc., remove moisture and provide more lubrication that Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel lacks. I'm seeing a lot of improvement in older model engines. My question is, are there benefits to using an aftermarket fuel additive in a newer model CTD, and if not, can I do any damage by using one anyway? Living in PA, we get average winters and I don't want to get stranded in a brand new vehicle because something gelled or froze in my work parking lot. Thanks for any help guys!

 

My truck can sit for two to three weeks and then run from central Florida to central Georgia and use a tank in a couple of days. I run Diesel Kleen in the tanks that sit and don't bother when I'm gonna burn up a tank fast.

In colder climates I'd use the Arctic Formula just to be on the safe side in winter. It may not be necessary but it can't hurt.

It's much more important in an older diesel engine designed when fuel had a lot more lubricity than today's ULSD...

 

I dont run an additive in mine just for winter I never have a problem with gelling here in central pa.. Tho I do carry a bottle of diesel 911 with me just in case.. There is lots of different products out there to run if you wanna.. Just spend some time and read some threads on them... I run 2 stroke oil in mine for extra lube for my injection pump but that isnt a problem with the newer cummins..

 

I bit off topic but here goes...

Because of my usage, often times my truck sits days, sometimes a couple weeks without use. What are the thoughts about using fuel additives to condition fuel from negative side-effects from this, if there are any. If you practice this, which brand?

Diesel kleen. Works good, safe for emission systems.

If within the pass six-eight years, I'm sure I've seen your shop. If they could just fix those winters I'd live there year around.
