2002 Dodge Cummings 3/4 ton just shuts off
Hey there, This is Rhea, I'm a rancher in Nevada...we have a 2002 Dodge Cumming 3/4 ton with just over 115,000 miles, had real good care. Just recently it started a thing of just shutting off when idling, doesn't do it all the time, may go weeks with out doing this, seems to want to shut off more when it is cold, or when the atmosphere is moist...actually started this just after a rain storm...runs great, no check engine lights are on. last week we just hauled 6 hd of horses never made a boggle...not sure what is going on, any ideas????

Thanks Mikem44
I was where thinking it may be something electrical like that...Seems to me that the Solenoid is electrical from one of the old ford I had problems with...Not sure I know what you mean about the position of the plunger rod...If you don't mind can you explain that to me a little bit...Thank you...

On my 12 valve engine the fuel solenoid is center top drivers side. It is on a bracket and has a small rubber boot on the bottom end. That boot covers a plunger rod that moves up and down via the solenoid that engages/disengages when you turn the engine on or off. If your problem is that solenoid, the plunger will flip to the off position while driving. By leaving your key in the on position the next time it dies and getting out and looking at the plunger and you feel it through the rubber boot it should be all the way down or out of the housing. If it is retracted back up into the housing it has closed and shut off the fuel. That means faulty solenoid.
You can confirm which way is off/on (plunger in or out) by feeling what position it is in while engine if off and then have someone turn key on and you will hear and see which position it moves to.

The 12 valve Cummins were the first type diesels offered.(1995) The 24 valve came out a few years later. Your configuration may be different. A check in a service manual or with the service dept. in your area should give you some specific info about your engine and what type and where it is located. I purchased replacement part from Thoroughbred Diesel in Kentucky. They were much less expensive than Dodge Dealer. To be seen how long this one lasts.
