I have a 2007 2500 with the 5.9 CTD. Took the truck to a local transmission shop to have them look at some slipping in 2nd gear.

I have always assumed it had the 48RE transmission since I had the 5.9. Again, I have always assumed that the 68RFE came with the 6.7 which was available also in 2007.

But, when the tech called from the transmission shop he said that it had a 68RFE 6-speed.

S0, did 07 5.9's come with a 68RFE? Maybe they started using in later in year, 7.5??? The transmission guy confused?

After posting the thread I went ahead and did what you are thinking. I called my local Dodge dealer and had them look it up using the VIN on file. And yes it is a 48RE.

Not long after calling the Dodge dealer the owner of the transmission shop called me back and apologized for the incorrect information he gave when he originally called. He stated it is a 48RE transmission. The tech who was checking things over told him it was a 68RFE. But, decided to verify himself and double check that it was a 48RE for sure.

Mystery solved!

I took it to the shop because it was starting slip pretty good in 2nd gear. They are suppose to start tearing it apart tomorrow and give me the news when they find out more.

 

I probably wouldn't want that tech learning on my truck, if it was mine...

 

True...going to mention that when the owner calls about what they found.

Especially since the 68rfe and the 727 based trannies look nothing alike. Except for the fact that they're metal automatic transmissions.

I've rebuilt both, which I assume is 2 more than whoever was looking at the OP's truck.

You don't have a 48re.

And there isn't much of anything you can do to the trans that will change mileage.
