Default Towing with 2006 Dodge 3500

Hello, I am trying to get an answer on if I need an exhaust brake on my 5.9 to pull a 12,000 to 16,000lb 5th wheel on the interstates in the US. I hear conflicting answers. Dodge or Cummins does not offer it anymore and they say it would tear up the Dodge tranny if I did get an after market one. Some retired truck drivers think I don’t need it while others do.
My gross at 23,000 is much less than their 80,000.
I welcome all comments. I am leaning on just taking it easy and staying on interstates in mountain areas.
thanks

None of them came with exhaust brakes until recently..... So, I would just make sure the brakes on the truck and trailer are in good shape, and operating properly, and call it a day.

I really don't think I would want to put that much stress on an already heavily stressed transmission. You don't need an exhaust brake on the highway, you need good electric brakes that are rated for the load they are stopping.
