Smelling Fuel
Looking for ideas on where I should look. When I get out of the truck after running down the road I can smell a hint of raw fuel coming from the engine compartment. I've looked all over the fitting and lines for the LP, filter housing, injection pump, and injector lines. I don't see anywhere that there is evidence of leaking fuel. The only spots it leaves in the driveway are from the breather hose that hangs down by the steering box. I don't have any hard starting problems whether cold or after running down the road a while. Any suggestions? Am I worrying too much, could it just be the smell of that breather?
what comes out of the breather should smell different than fuel. you can also clean that filter on the breather out on occasion to keep the oil drips to a minimum. what you could be smelling is the breather venting off fumes.
I thought there was no filter on that tube? Anyway, it's definitely a raw fuel smell, is there a different vent/breather that could be letting off fues like that? I don't smell anything in the cab when I'm going down the road.
if you follow the tube to the valve cover you will see where the filter is. I cleaned mine out last weekend since I noticed a small drip starting to form. sprayed some goo-gone in it, washed it out good with water and let it dry for a few hours.
you might have a loose connection that is just slowly dripping fuel and the heat of the engine is evaporating it off.
can you see anything with the truck at idle?
another thing I would check would be to see if you possably have fuel in the oil, this would also cause a fuel smell from the breather.

Well, checked everything when I got home, left the truck at idle, couldn't find a single wet spot that might be seepage. The last time I checked the oil it certainly wasn't increasing, I've used maybe 1/2 quart in almost 4k miles, seems to be about normal for this vintage engine. I 'spose if the leak gets worse I'll find it in a hurry.
on the breather tube on the 2000 thru the 2002 modles the put a stupid bottle on the end of it to catch the oil to keep the drips down but it has holes driled in it so when it gets a lil oil in it it drips but i put a blue paper shop towel in it as well took it out of the (zip tie that holds it to the front of the moter and laid it back to the driverside of the eingine on top of the wiring harness right there i change the rage out every 3000 miles and buy doing that it keeps my engine bay a hole lot cleaner and no drips under truck (unless a/c is on)the differnce in how much cleaner my einebay is compaired to my dads 99 in unreal just by catching that overflow
