2500 Brakes

2500 Brakes
I've just turned 92,000 miles on my 2500 4x4 diesel and have to replace the front brakes for a third time. I do occasionally tow a trailer, however both my trailers are equipped with brakes and I have a good brake controller. In all my previous vehicles I usually get upward of 60,000 miles before replacing brakes. I'm wondering if the more rapid wear is due to the heavier truck, or is this inherent with the HD Rams?
Is there a pad manufacter that makes a better, more long lasting pad?
Regards, Glenn

RE: 2500 Brakes
these trtucks do weigh in at around 7500 pounds. pad life does come into question when stopping something this big. also, one thing I have noted from other boards is that brake pads on auto's tend to wear quicker than the manuals.
anyway, you can trry and source some ceramics, but I would imagine after 50K the pads would still be good, but the rotors would be shot

RE: 2500 Brakes
I have a 98 2500CTD 4x4 Ext Cab Auto. Same thing happened to me for first couple of times. Don't buy cheapo pads from Autozone or Advance Auto. If you have a Napa or O'Reilly nearby, use their best brake pad. It costs about 65-85 but will only replace about every 30-45k. The cheapos last abot 10 -15k if you are lucky. The weight on the front of these trucks is enormous. Also, a good rule of thumb is two sets of front pads to on set of rear shoes/pads on any vehicle.

I can't remember the exact point in production when they switched to rear disc brakes, but if your truck still has the drums in the rear then I highly suggest you do this $20 mod: http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/d...8&page=1&pp=15
I did it to my V10, and I love the GREATLY improved braking!

I just keep replacing one roter and brakes at a time...... Lets say every time I make a big purchase- my brakes go out. I have the rear disc and glad they are actually...... the rotor turning is like one rotor every brake change cause they can never turn them. I swear. But I love my big bugger!!!!
