Newbie with Cummins questions HELP!!!!!
Okay, I'm a new guy. I have decided to put a Cummins in my 1967 M715 Jeep. It's not my first silly project, I just put a new 'Vette LS1 in my old Wrangler Jeep. I have a lot of questions because I know nothing about Cummins. Which years were 12 valves and which years were 24 valves? Which is the better motor? What kind of mileage can I expect? The M715 weighs about the same as a dually. I am looking for a complete truck with everything still working. If I could find a wrecked truck (no frontal damage) I know it would be a lot cheaper.
Where should I start looking? What can I expect to pay?
What I really need here is advice, and lots of it.
HELP!!!!!!!

I'm no expert either but I'll tell you what I know and that is there are a lot of guys on here with personal experience and a few guys with a LOT of knowledge.
Both are good but I can tell you that just from pokin around here myself I would say that Drew has a lot of both and I'm sure many would agree.
Good news / bad news?
Bad news : I cant help

RE: Newbie with Cummins questions HELP!!!!!
12V was offered up until '98.5 then switched mid year to the 24 valve. Major difference is the 12V is a lot more mechanical driven, which means you can't just add a computer chip for performance gains, but if you want to mod the 12V, you can do many mechanical changes to increase HP and in most cases, it's actually cheaper. As far as mileage, mine gets right at 19 when not loaded and I don't have any performance mods either

RE: Newbie with Cummins questions HELP!!!!!
89-93 12 valve Bosch VE pump, good engine, not alot of overhead on the pump
93-98.0 12 valve Bosch P7100, these are the 'P' pumped engines that can be made into monsters and will last well over a million miles
98.5-02 24 valve Bosch VP44, good engines, diecent pump, but you better not let the lift pump die or the VP44 dies, the weakest point is the VP44.
03-present, 24valve Bosch HPCR CP3, fully electronic, good engines, but injectors are a bit problematic.
your best bet is going to ask around for a 'P' pumped 12 valve, any good diesel shop that you call and ask them that will know exactly what you want.
as for price it all depends on how much power you want. some of these hopped up 12 valves can easily push 450hp and about 1000ft/lb. one guy I know has a dragster that is pushing well over 1100hp with a big single, water, meth, and giggle gas.
this sounds like a good repower canadate for a nicely massaged 12 valve, click the TDR logo in my siggy and you will find a gold mine of info about repowering useing a cummins

You have probably already been on this site but if not, check out http://www.ifsja.org/ The guys in the forum there seem to know every nut and bolt on a Full Size Jeep. They have also done a number of strange swaps into them. Just a thought.

Guys, thanks a lot! You have really helped me out. Especially Drew, who told me exactly what I was looking for. The information was priceless, and I doubt if a Dodge service manager could have explained it better. Based on Drew's info, I found a 98 12 valve with only 84,000 miles on it.
Perfect, thanks again!
