truck died today
I was on my way home this morning and my truck died. Almost like a no fuel problem. Had it flatbedded home, and it is getting fuel(pulled line from #1 cylinder, and top of fuel filter) and both had fuel present while trying to start. The only thing that seems strange to me is, after I crank it for any amount of time and turn the key back, the "pump" under the fuel filter seems to run(it goes for ~30 sec. and then shuts off) i am thinking that this is the injection pump, correct me if i am wrong. I never heard this pump run for this amount of time. Any ideas and/or suggestions would help me a ton to get my truck back on the road. Thanks in advance for any replies. BTW its a 99 3500 4X4 cummins.

RE: truck died today
I dont own a diesel, but a second gen ram. We had a customer come in with running issues and he did change out his lift pump. The new one went, so he went to Chrysler to get a new one, and turns out Chrysler has some problems with the lift pumps in the cummins. So what they did was take a pump like in a gas truck that is mounted in the tank, and do similar, and run the wires from the old lift pump to the new one in hte tank.
I dont know if its your lift pump that is gone, but during that 30 seconds when your pump is cycling, it should put out 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 liters of fuel. And your pressure outta your pump should be around 10 psi, and not go anywhere near 3 psi.
If it is your lift pump, adn you want one to just replace the one you have, Carter still makes them.
Hope this helps you out, and if anyone sees anything that I have messed up, please pipe up. This is info from Cummins and Chrysler.

RE: truck died today
Trevor, I know guys that can pull the fuel pressure down to zero on a fully stock truck. engine still runs fine on the top end with no popping or loss of power.
I'm unsure what mine runs. I do have a feeling I'm drawing it down pretty low since above 2800RPM it feels like the engine is just revving and not going anywhere, but I know, when my LP does die, and I know it will, I'll be tossing in a FASS or Walbro
