Default Engine Corrosion?

Has anyone else seen much in the way of pitting or peeling on your diesel engine and various parts under the hood? I have noticed over the years a very slow discoloration of the valve cover and fuel lines and anything metal like the fuel seperator canister. Not sure if it's some sort of transfer from the batteries or what. I live 350 miles from the pacific ocean, so I'm pretty sure it's not salt, and I dont see it on the undercarriage anywhere. Just under the hood. I've considered wiping everything with MMO or something for some protection or even just spraying some black paint over the crusty parts since I just degreased everything for the first time. Any suggestions or comments? The only damage I've had to deal with was a cracked fuel return line 2 years ago, but it's got me concerned about the others and whether it's an issue or not.[&:]
