lift pump
HI GUYS,
I have a 2002 2500 CTD with 68,000 miles. Yesterday she started to act a bit weird with me. I've done alot of scanning thru this forum and I'm thinking her lift pump is going...I'd like to get your input.
Started her up yesterday and as I started out there was absolutely no power...wouldn't go over 10 mph. I only went about 100 yards and I stopped and turned it off. Gave it a few seconds, restarted it and she ran fine for a little while. Started up a large hill and right around the 40mph mark she lost her power again for about 6 seconds, suddenly it was like she got a big drink of fuel and all the power was back.
Seemed to run fine for a while but on my return trip, she started to bog down again more and more often. Didn't have the problem of starting out again with no power, it only seemed to happen right around that 40 mph mark.
I am due for an oil change and new air filter...but I don't think either of those is the problem. I just had the fuel filter done at the last oil change.
If I turn the key on and off 3 times will I get a code to come up? Can I take her to an Autozone and have them throw her on the computer?
I don't know much about how these trucks operate...I just drive mine like I stole it.
I would appreciate any input of what I should be looking for.....when dealerships see a girl with a diesel truck they see dollar signs and like to try to talk over my head-trying to get me to do all sorts of things that don's really need done.
Thanks,
Kelly

get that lift pump changed, put on a higher volume / higher pressure pump like a FASS of Walbro pump. Holley Blue works as well from what I hear.
if you put a pressure gage you will notice the pressures are WAY down.

Thanks Drew for responding. I went to Autozone and had them put it on the computer.....got 2 codes.
P0234 overboost condition
and than the dreaded PO216 discrepancy between actual and desired injector timing.
ITs the injector pump isn't it????????[:'(]
not to knock you but I deleted your other post since you already have everything here and it will help with flow later if someone has the same issue and does a search
anyway, to answer your question, yes, it is the code that is the death kiss for the VP44, however you can pull it off and have it tested to make sure it is ok.
dont drive your truck untill you get the lift pump replaced at a minimum. if you replace the lift pump or get an inline pusher pump and the code goes away and things are fine you will be ok. but the important thing is right now is to not even try to crank the engine or you risk damageing the injector pump pernamently

No offensive taken by you deleting the 2nd post. I'm not quite sure how the forum works exactly and I was really anxious to get a reply so sorry if I screwed anything up.
Anyway, I appreciate you input and I guess it is off to the dealership next. I do have a question about a warranty. I do not have an extended and I am running on just the cummins warranty for 5 yrs/100,000 miles. Is an injector pump, lift pump, etc considered a part of the engine or does this come under something else like a fuel system situation?
If so I might just go by a extended warranty before taken it to a dealer to get fixed. I would hate to leave her sit for a week or two but I can to get me over the grace period of a used warranty.

the injector pump and lift pump is a part of the engine warranty. however they may give you a little heart burn about the lift pump, and they will put the new pump into the tank. if they give you any lip I would probably take the truck to a good local diesel shop and have them test the VP44 to make sure it is operating properly (which they can do) and put something on other than the ever failing lift pump.
The exact same thing you are describing happened to me. The VP44 was OK because I stopped driving it and had it towed the rest of the way home.

That's pretty much the exact same symptoms I had when both of my injector pumps (VP44) failed. My dealership has covered it under warrenty both times. They have also covered the lift pump failures (3) under warrenty. My truck is an '01. Good luck, don't let them mess you around!
