Good point. Never thought of the proximity to the turbo could couse the extra vacuum.

I still stand by my decision though. As soon as I got that thing off there I felt it. The crazy thing was I had the Bully dog on before and after the intake and I not only felt the dif. but I also saw a dif.

With the BD on tow/perf. pre intake lots of low end. Too muck throttle and I'd even get a scratch when it hit 2nd (awesome). After the AEM loss of low end, top end was slow to respond and when I got on it off the line I got a liitle scratch in 1st and a lot of smoke. Plus loss of mpg

After I took it off everything came back with a significant (close to stock) decrease in smoke. Crazy.

Since then added the Quadzilla (along with the BD for a total combined 120HP at the low setting) and couldnt be happier. Highway at 70-72 gives a solid 20!

With the addition of a 5" exhuast I did lose some low end but then again that might save some rubber!

CTD rules.

The fish are callin.

5" turbo back exhaust really hurt my low end torque and delayed spool up, but lowered egt's and sped up cool down after a hard workout. The drone was terrible and it was louder than I could stand. I trashed the 5" and went to a stainless 4" system and got my spool up and low end torque right back. My neighbors know whenever I start my truck, but it doesn't set off every car alarm on my block anymore!
Cheers

Drew, make a mental note of how your truck ran before you put the filter on, low end performance wise and then after the install. I'm curious to see what your impressions are with that setup is.

here is my filter and intake tube, currently not on the truck :-(

to tell you the truith, I never noticed anything on my butt dyno. the only thing I noticed were my resistors pluged into the MAP sensor.

I wonder if it has anything to do with me haveing 4.10's and you have 3.73's.

4.10's would be sweet... you didnt notice your turbo spooling quicker? what is your exaust setup? come to think of it... when I had the stock exhaust and added the afe, the only thing I recall noticing was it seemed to breath easier. I didnt really notice much of a gain until I opened up the exhaust. Once I did, holly carp.... (yeah I fish but not for carp lol) I have a hard time stomping on it without it overboosting past my alarms and de-fueling. that was one of the reasons I went back to the stock box to compare against. Now I see the benifit of the bigger filter, someone suggested bumping the max boost & alarm up to 40 psi. I have heard that the stock turbo will handle up to about 45 and also the head will handle that easily w/o gasket problems (needing head studs & an o-ring setup to go beyond 45)... any input on that?

I did notice the turbo spooling up quicker and a bit sooner with the larger filter, but that was all.

after I ran the kitty off I still havent noticed much on the butt dyno. I can stomp it and only hit a max of about 35 PSI. but I dont have any boxes on and that could be another point.

4.10's are nice but they are a bit tall for my likeing. when I'm pulling something I love them. but unloaded I'm searching for another gear. at 70mph I'm turning 2300rpm. I'm looking at a U.S. Gear overdrive unit to help out while unloaded and may have scored a used newly rebuilt one for rather inexpensive. but I just need to dig up the cash for it and two new drive shafts.

45 pounds is the upper limit of the HX35's efficency mapping. anything over that and you run the risk of blowing it apart from spinning it tooo fast. However, boost pressure is not what you have to worry about with the stock head gasket, it is the drive pressure. Ive heard of people pushing 60 pounds on the stock gasket and it holding, but when fueled to match that pressure and generate good power it sends the drive pressure insainely high.

personaly, if your gunna see over 50 pounds on a daily basis getting the block and head studded and o-ringing the head is a must. but for the guy that is on the road cruiseing at 10 pounds with a big single and pushing 45 pounds on occasion is fine with the stock head gasket, untill he takes it to the track and runs the TST to 9x9, edge to 3 and puts the BDDL on crazy larry

It sounds like you think i'd be ok with the edge settings at 40 or even 42 then. I've seen the 38 several times on my setup with the pro guard filter and it just makes me nervous. I'll see how it goes once I put the afe back in...

I doubt you would have any problems setting it to 40. but the one thing I would worry about is does your 05 have plastic or metal intercooler ends.

even in stock form the plastic ends have been known to blow off. why DC did this, my guess would be to save money, but they have since gone back to metal ends.

what's an inter cooler? jk... good question. I think it's got plastic ends but cant know for sure until I have a peek at it. I'm in the 2000 ram today getting it ready to sell so it'll have to wait until I get home. man I miss the power of the '05!
