Default Ticking Noise 2005 CTD?

Help needed. I have a ticking noise that comes and goes on my 2005 Cummins Turbo Diesel 6spd 2wd 2500. Truck is stock. Noise seems to come on at Freeway speeds. When I press the pedal I hear a ticking sound. When I release the pedal it goes away. When the truck in on cruise and goes uphill the ticking noise returns. Down hill it goes away. It also happens more when I am towing a load. I thought it might be water in the system and drained filter, but there was None. Does anyone know what this is or if it is harmful to my truck???

You have some carbon build-up on your injectors. . .if you can find it, buy a 32oz bottle of Power Service. when your tank reaches about 1/8th tank pour the whole bottle in and find a stretch of road that has some hills on it and put the engine under as much load as you can going up hill and let off on the down hill. This will get the cylinder pressures up high enough and heat things up enough it should burn the stuff off.

the Power Service has addatives that will help dissolve the Carbon, I use 16oz per tank with 8oz MMO

My 04 did the same thing but only when it was in cruise, I took it back to the dealer and took the mechanic for a ride we narrowed it down to the throttle cable that controls the cruise or I should say the cruise cable, not real sure how it works but anyway. He lubed the cable problem solved. Mabye you have the same problem.

Drew thanks for the advice. I will give power service a try. I tend to think that probably is my problem since I never use full power on this truck and drive with a lite foot.

Troop. Its not my cruise cable. I can hear the tick sound when cruise if off and I press the pedal uphill. When I let off for down hill the noise goes away.

Now I just have to find power service..

Drew, Your help is needed again. The noise went away after I did what you recommended. But it came back a in a couple hundred more miles. I took the truck on the freeway and drove it to the max again on hills to burn off the carbon build up again. The truck is now quiet. I also switched to your mix. Question. Can the dealer adjust the fuel mixter to keep from doing this or do you think I have a bad sensor?

My truck is a 2500 2wd 2005 CTD 6spd. I do not tow a heavy load. Most of the time I tow only a small enclosed trailer.

there are no bad sensors, these engines do this when you dont get the throttle to the floor on occasion. .. so basicaly, it is giving you a free pass to put the burn up the tires. . .for it's own good

taking my truck back up to Yosmite this weekend... would you suggest a stronger concentration of the PSD this time? I'll be going up the same grade once again... (the steep one...)

naa. . .I would just stay with the same mix ratio's. I found if I went to 20oz PS or 10oz MMO I didnt get much of a gain.

the thing that will help you the most is you are going to be increaseing the cylinder pressures, thus burning off any carbon deposits on the injectors, that is the one thing that keeps these engines running best.

lol, it just occured to me... "drive it like you stole it" and turbo surge "bark"... almost dont go hand in hand... whenever I drive it "normal", I get the bark often (with the edge on 1)... when I take it easy, the injectors seem to have carbon buildup... I almost cant win.

edit: actually, if I were able to control the exhaust flow like I mentioned in the other thread... the bark probably wouldnt happen.
