Default Put the stock airbox back on...

to see how much the exhaust setup helped... man what a difference the stock filter makes.... it sucks! it did bring up the low end torque which may help out on milage. I see that the turbo does not spool up as fast and the overboost issue i've had with the free flowing motor is not an issue. boost does not build up so fast that the alarm on the edge doesnt go off and the motor doesnt de-fuel at the worst time. I do think the milage went up a little, I wont know until tomorrow night when i fill back up at the 185 mile mark (430 miles takes too long...).

I cant wait to put the intake kit back on. I may get a slightly smaller filter than what came with the kit. That should help some with the low end & fuel economy.

I didnt like the stock air box design. the filter is a bit small for an engine that pulls as much air as it does. heck, my 2.4L taco has an air filter that is maybe 3 inches smaller. this thing I know pulls MUCH less air.

when I installed my BHAF I wasnt looking for more air flow, I was looking for a longer living air filter.

well, i'm about 60 miles from seeing how much it effects the fuel economy by having the pro guard filter on there. performance is night & day to say the least. since I dont have a 2nd 6" base filter to experiment with, this was the next best thing...

Oh yeah, since I have your attention Drew... the last tank I left out the MMO/PS mix as a reality check and milage dropped by 0.8 mpg. the motor still runs smooth though which I cant figure out... when I 1st got the truck it would vibrate like there was no tomorrow, now it's real smooth. any thoughts on this?

could be a combination of things, still have some lube left in the fuel system, but I'm willing to say the enging is a bit more broken in since you first started

I just looked at my spreadsheet and it looks like i've put in 35 gallons w/o the mix. One thing I did notice though is the motor sounds different w/o it. best way to describe it is "more klanky" then w/the mix. anyway's this tank (180ish miles) is almost up so I'll have new data tonight or tomorrow morning. the setup being stock air box w/o the psd/mmo mix and the edge on the stock setting.

I've come to the conclusion that the edge does not add fuel in the #1 mileage setting and that anything above #1 starts to add fuel... the overhead comp still reads approx 1.5 mpg off from the hand calculated #'s whether i'm using the edge on #1 or not, it's still the same delta between the 2. If that holds true then I should get about 15.8 mpg on this tank (180 miles) as the OH comp reads 17.4~17.5 mpg. at least that's what the spread sheet tells me anyway.

next up will be stock air box, edge on #1 (mileage) and no mix. (for approx 180 miles).
then it'll be stock air box, edge on #1 and add the mix. (for approx 180 miles).

If I can stand it that long lol... then i'll put the afe back on.

filled up yesterday... corrected odo was 185.5 and mpg was 15.94 mpg using the stock airbox & no additives.

now that you mention it, I may be able do an egt comparison while cruising on flat hiway at a given speed with the stock box & the afe kit. IDK if that will tell anyone anything but I have a great stretch of 7 flat hiway miles right near home that I use for testing different mods. couple of things that come to mind would be intake temp, boost level and egt's. i can get those right off the attitude monitor. the only thing is i'd have to do it later in the evening when the temps have cooled & winds have died down (if they are blowing) & the traffic has died some.

Update...

well, I slapped in the synthetic rotella and now need a new baseline for the comparison. I dont know if the synth has changed milage or not, to me it looks like the answer is no.

So, since i'm almost starting over, who would like what data with the open exhaust and stock air box (edge set on 1)...?

I currently can get the egt's on the flat land at 65, % throttle (useful to see how much low end torque is affected from the stock box to the afe kit, egt's & intake temp. also whatever else the edge will let me display.
