Default '96 Dodge turbo question

I have a '96 model 1 ton, that I blew the turbo on. My main question is, I can buy a new (in the box) turbo for a L-10 Cummins for $500.00 . I know this is way bigger than the stock unit, but I can make it fit. My question is, is it too much turbo for this engine? I've got the pump cranked WAY up on it. It's got dual straight stacks, and pulling a 24,000 pound dozer on a tandem dual gooseneck, it'll blow out almost as much black smoke as my '91 Pete with a 3406 Cat. But I don't want to blow the head off of it or anything. Plus I wonder if it would have too much lag. I already plan on installing a pyrometer and boost gauge while I have the turbo off.

that turbo will be way too laggy for you. you might look into a stock turbo from an 04.5 and on that is capable of pushing 35 pounds.

if my memory is correct, your 96 is only pushing about 16-20 pounds of boost.
