Default '062500 New owner questions

I just bought my '06 2500 truck about a month ago. I tow a bass boat about 3 days a week and the rest is mostly city\highway driving. Could use some advice from experienced diesel owners.

I am looking to replace the air intake to increase my performance and fuel economy. What are some recommendations of ones to go with? I've seen a few different ones out there on the market.

Also, what kind of fuel additive products would you recommend I put in with the fuel to protect the engine and injectors?

Is a pyrometer a good investment for the type of driving I am doing?

Any info. or recommendations would be helpful.

wow. . .loaded question, I'll bite

there are alot of intakes out there, some are good, some arent. Ive got personal issues with the K&N filter setups that have to be oiled. plus the stock filter is a bit on the small side for this engine. I personaly ripped out the stock ait box and fitted the monsterous NAPA 2190 air filter and gutted the stock intake tubeing.

Everyone will agree that an aftermarket filter wont give you any impressive mileage gains if any, but you can definately tell the turbo spools up a bit quicker. infact steve is currently testing the difference between the stock box and his aftermarket setup. he should chime in later.

Fuel addatives. Many here are useing a mix of Power Service and Marvels Mystery Oil. 16oz PS and 8oz MMO with good results. the engine actualy quiets down, you'll notice it idles smoother, adn you will gain a few MPG. I average right under 3mpg better with the mix than without. You can find both at wally world, however right at this moment power service has been taken off the walmart shelves due to a labeling issue and it needing to say that it is USLD compliant. but it can stil be found at other auto parts stores. your 06 is already ULSD ready, so even though you realy dont need the addatives, you will actualy save some cash by useing it.

lastly a boost / EGT gage. unless your planning on BOMBing the engine you realy dont need one, however a boost and egt gage is good to have so you can see what is going on under the hood. if you have an automatic a trans temp gage is also good to have. For what you are doing, it realy isnt necessary, but if you have a boost / egt and trans temp gage it will tell you REAL quick if something isnt working right.

I have the Westach dual boost / EGT gage mounted in an SRT-10 grabhandle in my truck. it gives a VERY clean, and factory look. I have a pic of it in action in my gallery.
