Default Questions on cool air intake and chipping...

Any who i am new to the forum and have been loving everyones posts but i am unclear on some things... i want to get just a bit more power and i was told here localy i should get a bully dog chip and a s&b cool air intake because it would give me like 40 more hp with the chip and 20 more with the cool air intake but here is my thing they tell me if i get the cheap bully dog that is not downloadable it will not show anything on my computer so to keep my warrenty.....

i also hear that these components i can install myself and it would be rather easy... i am worried that these things will affect my tranny however which i would also like advise on... so i will write the specs of my truck down below... um i think thats all....

My truck: Atlantic blue,QC long bed, big horn, CTD, 3.73 rear,2"leveling kit,35's,4 speed auto tranny,SLT......

I'm Rust Proof.....

I have a diablo sport predator (www.diablosport.com) which has three different settings. i've had pretty good luck so far, fuel mileage is slowly gaining each tank. on the low setting 60hp , you really can't tell its there until you pass someone. on the high setting 160hp, hang on, lots of black smoke and tire wear is an issue. i'm not sure sure how the bully dog works but some boxes increase fuel pressure, which is hard on the factory lift pump. most boxes do timing and duration. do search on here and you can find tons of post on boxes and thing people have done to there ctd

get an edge ez and an AFE stage 2 intake. that will get you more than enough. If you open up the exhaust, your motor will scream on the top end but you may loose a little on the low end so be selective on the exhaust.

the edge stuff is a snap to put in.

mmo = marvels mystery oil
ps = power service(gray bottle)
you can get these at about any auto parts store or Walmart
Drew's mix is 16 oz. ps and 8 oz. mmo in every tank.
it does cost a little per tank, but you will help your mileage a little and it is nice on your engine internals

If your worried about the ECM then the inline boxes are the way to go-no downloading or reprogramming. I thought long and hard and went with the bully dog Tripple dog and am very happy but its a downloader.

but.....I also put on a Quadzilla non programmable chip/box that adds an extra 65 HP and 100 foot lbs of torque. Very easy to install like any of the others (edge,bd, etc.). The main reason I got it was to aid in mpg (it claims extra 65 HP with 1-4 mpg) and I have to say I really like it and with the two combined it'll really put you in your seat and I still get a solid 20 on the highway.

I also run the afore mentioned mix (thanks to Drew and this forum!). I have run it every tank and also every other and I do see a decrease of 1-2 when I dont run it so now its in every tank.

As far as raising the fuel pressure personally I think they all raise it at some point. Edge, BD, Quadzilla, TS, etc. I think mostly on the higher setting but still I think they all do. Ive looked at alot of them and Ive seen vendors not mention the increase in rail pressure where the manufacturer did and vice versus.

Either way I think its safe to say you dont want to run any of these on the max setting all the time without additional mods (trans. fuel pump, turbo, etc.). But really I run mine (BD) on stock with the low end power added on top of the Quadzilla econo box and shes got all the power I need.

For referance I did open the exhaust (and kept the CAT) added a drop in filter with the BD TD and the QuadZ chip. Other than that shes stock.

BTW nice lookin truck. How do you like the leveling kit and the 35"s? Hows it drive, mpg, etc.? Also any rubbing with those tires?

Sure i love the leveling kit and the tires i bought it with them on there and i think it is a way smoother than my stock 1/2 ton GMC.. there was a little rubbing on one side and a dremmel tool fixed that np... there bfg tires and they say there a pretty good ride on the web site.. and i like your truck as well.. wish there was a mega cab long bed i would have owned that truck...gas still sucks at this point it time but i am seeing it increase i am up to 12mpg at 2000k on the motor i was at 9mpg with 100 miles

Damn either those 35's are killing your milage or you're really layin' into your truck.

I just hit 1500 miles. I ran 15.5mpg city on my first tank and have consistantly seen 17mpg and climbing since. I ran around 19mpg on my 3rd tank which was 90% freeway at 80-85mph. I can't wait til this thing breaks in. Its blowing my old powerstroke out of the water.

Are you sure you got the 3.73's, From what I've seen posted your MPG sounds in line with that of what the 4.10's are gettin straight off the line. I'm only guessing as alot of the 3500's come with the 4.10's.

Either way the 35"s are def. going to put a damper on the MPG. I'm currently saving my pennies to put a leveling kit and 35's on mine as well. The MPG will be sorely missed but the CTD has the n*ts to push em, and the look,............fogetaboutit!

If the power out wieghs the mpg then go with an adjustable downloader / programmer of your choice. If the MPG tips the scale then I say go with QuadZilla non programable 65hp chip. I really like it. It did what it said and that was increase my MPG.

As for the extra power......I cant say 100%. I do notice a diff. since I added it but again I stacked it on top of the BDTD.

BUT,...... I again, I can say that since I added the QuadZ my MPG has (by hand) increased.

Cheers
