Best exhaust for 06 cummins
I was wanting some advice on what kind of exhaust setup would be best for my truck. i had a 98 before and just had a straight pipe on it.. but i heard things about on the new 06's if you didn't have enough back pressure it would screw your turbo up... and i don't know much bout warranty issues... I was just wanting to free up some extra horsepower and lower som EGT's... and of course the sound!!!!!!! just curious as to what anyone esle has done and what they think bout it... and i still want to keep the warranty... as most of us would...
thanks STUCK

welcome to DF!
I have a Magnaflow 30" long 4" in/out setup which is straight thru. sounds ok to me, a little loud under load but not too bad. Opening up the exhaust will cost you some low end torque so beware. I lost about .75~1.0 mpg as near as I can figure it (hand calculated). however that was with an open intake (afe stage 2 with a PG7 filter).
turbo spools hella fast, egt's seem to be good (I dont tow so it's hard for me to say).
if I were to do my exhaust again, i'd put something on with at least 1 maybe 2 baffles in it that flowed well. I'm not sure who makes what in that respect...
this is what I found anyways...

On my '06 I went with the 5" turbo back MBRP single with the flow through muffler and originaly took the off the cat. I must say the sound was great! But it didnt take long (the ride home) before I realized it might be too good. When I got on it (or even slightly) this thing was LOUD. I mean window shakin, car alarm activating LOUD. I also lost a very noticeable amount of low end torque. I put the cat back on and the sound is awesome and I gained some low end back.
Now I also run the Bully Dog Tripple dog on top of the Quadzilla non adj. chip. Since I upgraded to the new version of the BD (2.3.0) with the low end power (not the torque manager-thats another story) addition combined with the QuadZ. I have all the low end I could ask for while keeping the BD on stock!
That said, If I was to do it all over again..............
I would just repolace the stock muffler with a free flow and save a couple hundred $. From what I have read since (I didnt do my homework on the exhuast-bigger is better right?) the stock 4" will due until we get to the 500rwhp mark. It still opens it up a enough and adds the sound we crave.
Or.........., if I was going to spend the money (that I already did) I would go with a 4" dual system with the flow through muffler. Not only sounds good but looks even better.
So, replace the muff. for $125-200 for sound and extra (10-15?) hp or replace the exhuast (cat back) for $350-650 for the sound and extra (again 10-15?) hp or...................,
Replace the muff. ($150-200), add a drop in filter ($70) and a chip (your choice $275 and up depending on adjustability, features, etc) and get that CTD screamin for the same price as the exhuast ($500-700).
I may replace the 5" with the 4" duals. The other thing to consider is the sound (inside the cab) on long hauls. The set up I currently have does have a rather annoying drone right at 70-80 mph. After the first 1-2 hrs I find myself turning up the sterio. Then at the 2-3rd hr mark I cant ignore it anymore and between 3-4 I got a head ache!

Yeh,
The warranty might be OK if you just replaced the muff. and left the CAT on and definitely gone if you went with one of the CAT back models but again it really is up to what kinda service manager you go to.
Better to find one you like and then start asking questions to test what they are OK with.
As far as the chips, downloader’s, or programmers go- at least around where I'm at in the Midwest, that would be a real no-no.
When I need to take mine in I take the chip off and unload the BD program and return the ECM back to its pristine state all in the name of the ever precious warranty. I was, and still am, very squeamish about that.
I'll tell you what though, when I take the BD or chip out of the truck there is a huge diff in perf. I mean the CTD runs great without any help and I never thought a chip would make that much dif but I just can’t wait to get home and load er up again!
If you’re thinking about chipin it an inline module might be the better way to go. It’s a personal pref really as I really like the BD Triple dog. I set it on one setting and forget it really. But the Edge is a fav of allot of people to. Originally I was torn because I didn’t want to run any wires into the cab (for the service rep to see-warranty) which you have to do with most adjustable (plug and play boxes) but the more I think about it the downloader’s would have a better chance of scrambling the ECM if something went wrong (knock on wood) where as most boxes (Edge, Quadzilla, etc) just plug in line between the ECM and other components adjusting the signals from the ECM to the rest of the truck.
You just gotta love these trucks!

the only cable that goes thru my firewall with my edge is easily removed. IIRC it went thru the steering shaft pass thru, dont quote me on that though, it's been a while. When I have to take mine out, it'll be a 10~15 minute un-install, it's really quick.
