Hey guys..i am wonder if any of you have had these problems.

first of all the factory carter lift pump is junk. just doesnt have a great track record for longevity. second the VP44 injector pump on your 2nd gen is another issue. The pump is lubricated by the diesel fuel itself. when the lift pump dies the fuel flow goes away and thus the lubrication of the pump also goes. The VE, P7100, and CP3 pumps have have also been used on these engines are all lubricated by the engine oil, not diesel fuel, so they are a bit more robust when fuel flow goes away.

Bosch and DC have both acknowledged the fact the VP44 injector pump was a bad design.

If I were you I would go ahead and have the injector pump replaced, then either have a FASS II 95gph pusher pump, or the walbro pusher kit installed. if the dealership replaces the lift pump it will be replaced by an in-tank pusher pump, that unfortunately is the same pump and has about the same issues.

is it common for lift pumps to die, for all 24 valve trucks it is, is it common for the injector pump to die, for 98.5-02 trucks it is.

My 01 CTD has been replaced with the in-tank pump. Which FASS do I need? The one built for the 01 is not made for the in-tank pusher pump. The only thing I could see that would work on my truck would be the one made for the 05 model. Does anyone know a good knoweldgable FASS dealer?

02, so far I have replaced the Injector Pump and also installed the comlete FASS system, and no more problems, just do it and then you will not have any more problems, BUT be sure to use a fuel Pump lubricant. I am now using the Lucas brand and wow, I can hear and feel the differance, in my 04 VW Golf TDI, not so noticable in my CTD, but it works

My 99 had the lift pump fail which lead to the failure of the Injector pump. The stealership replaced the engine mounted pump with the in tank pump. I then put a fuel pressure gauge to monitor it. 2 years later, the fuel pressure would start to drop to 5 pounds after about 2 hours of travel.

The stealership said that was normal and not to worry about it. I asked if the injector failed again because of the replace lift pump they put on, would they pay to repair it? NO!!!!

So I purchased an Airdog and put it on myself and haven't had any issues until the truck got totaled by an idiot who pulled out in front of me. I took the Airdog off of the 99 and put it on the 2001 that I purchased as a replacement. No problems since.

Put on an after market lift pump now to save yourself headaches in the future.
