Default CTD Designed RPM

I wonder what rpm the 24v was designed for. If I modified my rig Chitty Bang-Bang style and sailed off the horizon what rpm would be the most efficient? Just a thought.

Been thinking about getting a gear vendor setup for my '01, auto, 4x4, long bed, just to give me 4 more gears and hopefuly drop the rpm's enough to decrease my fuel comsumption. Has anyone purchased and used one of these???? If so what kind of results did you get outta the unit?

go to the www.cummins.com website and search around... there is a tool that allows you to enter your tiresize & gears to find out if your setup is ideal for the cummins motor... I have a link at work but wont be back there for a week..

I have a Gear Vendor Overdrive on my 1998 12V 3500 Dualie rwd, Auto Trans. I think it is great. On the Interstate, I am getting just above 20 MPG. At 70 MPH I'm turning 1,500 RPM with stock size tires and 3.54 gears. I just bought my 98, and it came with the Gear Vendor. (I have checked with two guys I know who tow a lot with diesel pickups, they have had the Gear Vendor Over Drive for several years, and say they have had NO problems, and think they are worth the money.

If you are going to try to justify the ~$ 4,000 installed cost on milage alone, it is difficult. Even if you drive a lot, it will take 4 or 5 years to payout. HOWEVER, that said, it sure gives you a lot of options when pulling hills with a heavy trailer on behind. I also think it will result in a lot less wear and tear on the engine, and all engine driven accs., due to the lower engine RPM. I find that when I am pulling a 5,000-6,000 Lb. trailer on flat ground at about 60-62, (California Speed Limit = 55 for towing) I have no trouble at all with the Gear Vendor engaged, turning about 1,325 RPM. I also have an ATS Transmission and an ATS 5 Star TQ, with a Commander Lockup controller, so I have full control of where the TQ locks up.
If you plan on keeping the truck for 4 or 5 years, I'd suggest you "go for it".

it can run at 2500rpm all day long and not break a sweat. . however your fuel mileage will be in the toilet. the engine will run just as well and still give you enough passing power at 1600rpm, plus you will be useing less fuel.

FWIW, the max RPM of the stock CTD has been reported to be around 4800rpm. at that engine speed on stock parts the engine has been known to puke rods and pistons, bend the crank and bust out the mains.

on a built engine with marine pistons, billet rods, o-ringed head, and other goodies some have seen past 5K

So Drew, in essence, what your saying is that red lining my 06 ctd to the 3200 rpm mark (which is where it redlines), won't hurt it ? And the reason that I ask is that with the low end setting on my Triple Dog, unless I'm watchin it, it will redline prettttttyy easy.

yes. . .the engine defuels at 3200. . .unloaded the engine will rev to 3500rpm, while rolling down the road the computer defuels the engine at 3200.

run it there, I wouldnt. but hitting it wont hurt a thing if done on occasion
