going to replace lift pump-need advise
I just purchased a 1998 3500 24v CTD 4x4 Dually Quad Cab. I was pulling our 27' 5th wheel trailer the other day and noticed that I should have more power pulling a slight, and I mean slight, grade. The pickup has 77,000 miles on it. I have a friend that works for Cummins and has a CTD and he said that I should replace the lift pump at the current mileage as that is typically when they give out. I have read here on several threads on some tips. If I got it right, remove the electrical fitting, loosen the in and out fuel line fittings, remove from block and replace the lift pump, putting things back in reverse order, right? I also have read that I should bleed some other fittings when I reassemble. Can someone help. This is my first diesel vehicle. Thanks for the help.
I recommend that you pick up a "Haynes" manual at any local parts shop. It has a pretty good step-by-step on this. Also, I downloaded the complete service manual (pdf format) from another forum. Not sure if the moderators here would approve posting the link here. Nevertheless, I find the service manual very helpful also--interesting reading in a sick sort of way.
I don't know about 98's , but for mine ( 2001) , I also changed the gaskets on the input/output fuel fittings on the lift pump. If the 98 has those, maybe order a set of those too, since they are very low price.
Other than that, I think it is important to focus on cleanliness, be careful not to introduce dirt into your fuel system. Couldn't hurt to clean the fittings before you loosen them.

for not much more, you can do better than the stock carter pump that is used. you can search around for a walbro kit pump that will give you more life, and also a bit more flow and pressure so you wont worry about burning up the VP44.
The problem is that I drive a 3500 CTD on a D50 4banger budget. I can't spend much more than $100 on this pump. I was told by the friend at Cummins that I can get one there for about $75. I would like to put it on today so I can go to Colorado and see my mom (about 300 miles round trip). Thanks
$800 part? I wish. Here they want $1400- $1800 uninstalled for the VP44 Injector pump. I've checked dealers, local shops, and a few places that sell aftermarket and stock parts. I can't say to much cause my lift is going out. I'm just trying not to drive it for 2 more days hopefully!!
Google "Bosch VP44" and you will find several places selling the VP44 for right at $1000 or a little less. I haven't found one for $800 yet but I have come close.

Crazy! I called the dealer and he looked my Vin# up and said my warranty expires August 4th. I have an appointment tomorrow but don't I need to remove my chip? and if so- whats the best way to remove it?
