Default ATF additive

About to loose my tranny, any additives out there to add to get a few more miles out of it? Will synthetic help at all or am I better to just flush and replace stock fluid? Went to pass a car yesterday while pulling a 12k lbs trailer. Truck downshifted, rpm shot through the roof and truck didn't go any faster. Pulled box out - turned engine to stock. checked fluid, was full but burnt and has some friction disk material in it.

I doubt you can get much more out of that trans. If you are not on WT, it's time to consider switching out to a heavy duty trans and torque converter, also add a lock up controller, especially if you are doing a lot of heavy pulling. There are a number of options out there, but after doing a lot of research, I went with an ATS Stage 5 trans with a billet input shaft and their "5 Star" TC. I already had the commander lockup controller. ATS will WT the trans. for 100,000 miles/3 years, and the TC for 150,000 miles/3 years, BUT you must have the trans serviced every 15,000 miles by a shop, have the shop sign off on an ATS form they supply you, and send the data in. The ATS option is "Pricy", but should be bullet proof. If you plan on keeping the truck a long time, as I do, then it, or other MFG. heavy duty trans/TC option should be worth it.
