Difficult starting sometimes
Does anyone know why my 05-CTD 2500 needs longer to start sometimes then other times ?[>:]
Most of the time it starts in the regular 1 - 2 sec. period, but I noticed since the weather has been a lot warmer it might actually take 3 - 4 seconds.[:@][sm=feedback.gif]
I know 3 - 4 seconds does not sound like a long time but it feels like it is not right.
Other then that the truck runs excellent... 61,000 miles and counting. 1 Year and 1 week... not bad.

I looked it up but could not find anything that goes with this topic.
I noticed it only happens after a quick stop / start when driving locally. When the truck is"cold" or has been sitting for longer then 30 minutes it does not happen, only after a 5 or 10minute break period in between starts and stops.

the only one I could find was TSB 18-017-05, which is
this is for cold temps though. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fuel pressure from the lift pump not priming the system properly.
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a Diesel engine (sales code
ETC/ETH) which has been converted to the in tank mounted fuel transfer pump.
Overview:
This bulletin involves erasing and reprogramming the Cummins ECM with new software.
Symptom/Condition:
The vehicle operator may describe long crank times when start a cold engine in temperatures
below freezing.
The following enhancements are included with this software:
Improved crank times in cold ambient temperatures
ETC/ETH) which has been converted to the in tank mounted fuel transfer pump.

could it be oil pressure? when the oil is cold it is easy to build pressure because it is thicker. When it is warm, it may take longer to build oil pressure above the safety set pressure. Just a shot in the dark, and some thinking out loud.

I am going to keep a good eye on it the next few days. It has been very hot here in the NorthEast to past few days and thats when I noticed it more. Had the truck parked in the shade today ( outside temp 95F )
and it started with no problem, later after a 30 minute drive home, and leaving again shortly thereafter it was taking again the extra cracking time...
It does not show any codes what so ever s for now I can keep breathing easy.
The funny thing is this past winter I was in Northern Michigan where it went below 10F and she started right up. I am not to worried yet but I figured maybe someone else had this isue as well.
