RE: What one to buy
the cummins set up right will get you over 20mpg on the highway easy. auto with 3.73's or lower.
yes they are a bit pricey, but the thing is the engine itself is what keeps the resale value of the truck. the resale value on average of trucks from 93-98.0 is higher than those from 98.5-02 all because of the injector pump and the problems it has. luckly the newer pumps starting in 03 do not have this problem, but there are other issues to contend with, but are easier to fix.
if you want one you better save up the coins, guys realy arent about to let these things out of their clutches unless they replace them with a bigger badder truck, and it is hard to beat this one but if you do find one, you better jump on it, it wont stay around long.

RE: What one to buy
Just to recap what Drew said about resale,,,, after four months of owning mine, I looked up the resale and it was right at what I paid for it,,, of course I did get a pretty good deal. If you do decide to go with the diesel remember to keep your options open and shop around, b/c different dealerships offer different deals with better incentives. Where I live there are like 3 Dodge dealers within like 50 or 60 miles of each other, and they all offered different deals.

i have an 87 dakota w. a 3.9 and an automatic, (a999) It doesnt do to bad, in a mix of about 65% highway 35% city, i average about 15-16 but my foot tends to always be in it. So if you took it easy on the truck im sure you could get a few more out of it. And the truck has a carb, with fuel injection i speculate itd be better yet.
