First of all, do you have an auto or a stick? The autos are a great transmission, but need improvement to stand up to what we can make from the Cummins.
I think that is the first or second thing to address.
Gauges are first for sure. Pyro, Boost at the minimum. Some chips, like the TST and the Edge Juice, are available with gauges included. This is a good way to kill 2 birds with one stone.

So, next is your transmission. If it is the auto, plan on a tq converter, Valvebody, and if you plan to be rough on the truck an input shaft. This is where you will spend the most money, but its far cheaper than the towing bill and repair when you don't spend the money early.

After that, open up the exhaust. You have 4" from the turbo back already, so just replace the muffler and the cat, or do a complete system if you want. 5" is a popular option, though no performance increase will be seen untill you are over about 600 hp.

The stock intake should be ditched next for a good flowing one. Here you need to make a desicion. The stock air box will yeild you better fuel mileage, but less flow for all out power. You can use the stock system with a drop in free flowing replacement for mileage, or go for the airflow with an AFE stage 2 intake. Depends on what you value more. Expect a 1-2 mpg loss when removing the stock system.

I have sold a ton of aftermarket intercoolers and everyone seems to be hapy with them. I will be installing a BD in mine here soon. Banks and BD both build an excellent intercooler kit.

After all this, you will NEED a turbo. The small exhaust housing will choke the motor to death, causing high EGTs and poor fuel economy. Something like an Industrial Injection Phat Shaft 62 would be perfect. Quick spooling, cool running. These are spome nice turbos. We had a SPS62 on an 06 MC Dually with only a Superchips and it had no problems spooling.

Well, that should get you started!
