Default Fuel filter...

OK looking to change my fuel filter again, this time it'll be 10k miles. my question is with the additives (drews brew) being used as often as they are, can the filter clog sooner due to the MMO?

what do you guys think?

my though is that if there is oil in the fuel that passes thru the filter, it may leave some of that oil behind on the filter which may or may not affect flow. Drew mentions that he changes his every 5k, the owners manual says every 15k. the 1st time I personally did mine was at 25k and it affected performance and mileage.

Although I don't suggest it - for the first 45K miles the dealers servicing my '04 CTD never bothered to change the filter - and it ran fine! When the lift pump went out after that, I decided to change the filter more often for fear that contributed - although they covered the pump under warranty and didn't suggest a lack of filter changes had anything to do with it...

thats a good question. . .I guess you would need to look at the size of the MMO oil in microns and compare that to the micron rateing on the filter itself.

the filter I use, Fleetguard FS19579E filters to 10 micron. or you could go with the FS19800E that filters to 7 micron. I realy dont know what the average micron size of the fluid in MMO is. If MMO is clogging the filter prematurely it would be tinted slightly red, however every time I pull my filter it is always jet black. which could be just from the inherent dirt and gunk that is in diesel. After 5K on my filter I can say that would be around 275 gallons of diesel, that would equal about a half gallon MMO and right at a gallon of Power Service at the 8ozMMO 16oz Power Service every fill-up.

where am I going with this. . .I have not a clue, yet I have seen guys pour ND30W into the fuel tanks and the filter when pulled looks about the same. If you want absolute filtration though you can get a CAT fuel filter that filters to 1 micron

I would still expect the filter to be black, i was thinking that the MMO might be trapping more dirt on the filter as it passes thru and may be clogging up the filter faster. Now that I have my edge back on, I have about 1000 miles to evaluate it before the swap, then compare against after the swap. (which will be the amsoil oil change time as well...[&:]) it would be nice if I had nothing better to do but to make 1 change at a time and collect data for each change...

I just changed my 98.5 filer today, it was black as usual, even filters in my boat are black and its red diesel. the filter change was a walk in the park. BUT there is supposed to be a bleed fitting in the center of front engine, never did find it. a 20 sec crank and good to go. any where i can see a picture of this bleed screw?
