long time Cummins owner, 2 Ram pickups , 1 in boat, I'm new to forum, and I have on the most part just put fuel, maintenence and go!.
My concirne is I have a 98, 24valve, 2500, 4x4, auto with camper about 4oolbs over gvw. I see that the lift pump is a problem, I travel back in the boonies and don't want to get stuck.
Question: how can I tell pre 98.5 or after, and I'm thinking of changing prior to failure, and does anyone know of anyone that can change over to FASS system in San Jose Ca. area?
thanks for any help!

Just my thought. I have a 95' CTD. My lift pump is on the driver side of the block towards the rear, about half way down. It has a preheater/filter bowl next to it. The fuel pump has a hand plunger for when you need to manually prime the lines. I thought the 98.5 an newer CTDs had a newer type Bosch electric pump? I'm sure I'm wrong but I keep thinking VP-44? Or something along those lines. I may be wrong. There's some slick guys on here who know a lot about a LOT of things with Dodges. It's scary what they know! Your answer can't be too far away.......lol.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Pre 98.5 had the 12 valve engine, same one you have Demon. The VP44 is the injection pump that is on the 98.5 and newer 24V engines. the 12V engines from 94-early 98 had the P7100 injection pump. That lift pump is a lower pressure pump that supplies fuel from the tank to the injection pump, the 12V engines had a mechanical one that ran off the camshaft, the 24V engines got an electric pump that is famous for being weak and dying. When it dies the VP44 has to draw its own fuel, it can do it but doesn't like to and it'll eventually die trying.
cpt:
To monitor your lift pump a fuel gage, sensing the outlet side of the fuel filter is a very good idea. If you can draw that thing below 10psi at wide open throttle your lift pump isn't doing well. As for the FASS install, I'm in Wisconsin, can't help with CA. If you're mechanically inclined from what I've seen they aren't too bad to install yourself, though.

Guess I should look into a fuel gage huh?
Thanks for the tip !!

wow, so if i have a 98 truck with the 24 valve engine it is a 98.5 newer, I have a vp44 injector pump, I see there is a few FASS pumps for my application, 95gph or 150gph, w/ filter kit or w/o filter kit. from what i am reading the 95gph pump only, will be the replacement.
if i read this right. is it wise to go to the 150gph, any better preformance? thanks for the help.
