RPM's

Question about speed and rpm's.............
My truck has the 4.10 ratio and when I'm blasting down the hwy at around 65, the rpm's are around 2000 to 2100 (I can't remember right off hand). The dial redlines at 3150 it looks like and I'm panicked......sorta. Should I be? I was told to not worry at all about it since this is how diesels work. Obviously, the rpms would be lower if it weren't for my 4.10, but either way, are "high rpms" normal when this puppy redlines at just over 3k?
Most of the time I just buzz along at 60mph, so this isn't a critical thing for me, but it still kinda bugs me because I pass idiot slow-pokers sometimes and get into a bit.
This is my first diesel ever so I have no knowledgebase for this.
Thanks!!!

I have the same 4.10 rear end - my rpm's run similar to yours. Don't worry, I understand from others in the forum the truck starts to defuel before you get into trouble rpm-wise (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
'Drive it like you stole it' someone once said - it works for my truck.

With many of the older model diesel engines rpm redline's were intended to prevent the piston from taking out the valves so it was an indirect function of the cams used to maximize engine performance at lower rpms. I don't know about these computer controlled engines but I'd suspect that there is still a chance of severe engine damage when you run rpms into the redline range.
