Default Altinator doing funny things

Hey guys.

My 06 2500 is acting weird to my knowledge anyways. When i cold started it last night (36 F) and waited for it to warm up the volts gauge and the lights would power down every so often then back up again. Like my altinator was kicking in and out. Is this a power saver thing or something? Never noticed this with any other vehicles B4. Is this something new or do i have a problem? The truck runs and drives great otherwise. Just needs a Kore suspension, ATS intake, and a exhaust system.

Thanks

I beleive its the intake heater, draws a bunch of current cycling on.

The previous poster is correct. It is your intake air, heaters. It looks like the heating elements in a bread toaster. They come on when the incoming air is below 45 degrees I believe. They do draw an enormous amount of current, and will dim headlights as well as drop the voltage meter. It is normal operation. Your volt meter will do just what you say it's doing. It will drop, then return to normal, and then drop again, etc. Once the engine reaches a certain temp, the heaters will stop cycling.

Heating the air helps with combustion when the engine is cold. (45 or lower). Our trucks have no glow plugs so heating the air and fuel is the only other option.

Good luck.
