I'm having some weird AC stuff going on lately that I hopeing one of you guy's can shed some light on for me.

About a month or so ago while crusing with my AC on, I rolled down my window while crusing down the highway. About a minute after rolling down my window, what I thought was smoke came POURING out of my vents. I $hit my pants thinking my truck was on fire. When I put my hand over the vent, I could feel that it wasn't smoke, but steam or whatever you call it. It was the same steam / smoke / WHATEVER you want to call it that you get when you open a freezer door. Same kinda stuff.

When I get into my truck and turn the AC on at full blast, it works fine. As the truck gets cooler, I naturally turn the fan speed down. What seems to happen though is that when I turn the fan speed it to it's lowest setting ( still with the AC turned to it's coolest point ) no air seems to come out. I can sometimes get it to work again by turning the direction **** as if to defrost the window and let it run that way for a while, and then when I turn it back down it works fine again. This trick only works sometimes. The only way to get it to work as it should again is to actually turn the truck off for a couple of minutes and fire it up again. That's the ony way to get it to work.

Obviously there's something wrong, but I don't know what. Any of you guy's have a clue where to start ??

 

first of all that was just condensation comeing off the evaporator, no harm done, looks cool and I bet it was VERY humid that day.

second problem I would say would be a vacuum line problem. I would also have the fan motor checked out, fan could be getting ready to scieze up.

I know I havent been around for a while, computers at work took a dump and I couldnt get on this site. I could pull others up fine, but this one[:@]

Sure, it get's humid here in Philly sometimes, but this is the first time this has ever happened, and I've had this truck for years. I would think that I would have seen it happen at least once before now.

As far as the fan motor, I don't know about that one either. It sounds like the air is being blasted, but no air is actually moving. It's almost as if something is blocking all of the vents from the inside.

 

The condensation thing is not a problem I have seen it a time or two in every vehicle I've owned. I bet what is happening with the air flow is that the condensor is freezing up. Ever seen a window a/c unit in the house do that? Next time it happens turn the controls to vent only (no compreesor running) I bet you see the condensation coming out of the vents shortly after that along with the air flowing again. Now if that's the case, find an A/C expert to find the fix, they may just need to adjust the refrigerant level, or the drain for the condensor may be pluggged up (not dripping out under the truck like normal).

Ok, here's a strange question .... where the heck is the " Vent only " setting?

I thought last night when I responded that it would be easy, but driving into work today I noticed that I don't have a " Vent " setting.

Any ideas ??

vent only for you would be where you turn the **** to where the arrow is pointing twards the dude's head. or any setting where you dont see the snow flake or the defroster.

nope, all that does is open up the line from the block to the heater core.

 

I would have to agree with the condensor freezing. You may have a clogged/leaking condensor. Either of the two would cause freezing. It will freeze if there is low freon, to a certain point which the low pres switch would prevent the compressor from spinning. A blockage of airflow over the condensor would cause freezing within minutes. Heavy humidity is what will freeze. Free water...lol.

I have in the past, removed my blower fan and it's speed control, sprayed into the fan hole (you can see a lot of the condensor. You see even more with a mirror and drop light) a can of fin cleaner. I get mine from a refirigeration supply store. It works VERY well. Then I spray my garden hose, which I have hooked up to my hot water heater. Spray in small bursts. Let it all roll out the drain, then spray again. Make sure the drain is working properly.


Check your high and low sides with gauges. If they are within the parameters according to Chrysler, then the condensor would be MY first look.

You will only get a good high/low side reading if you do it when the truck is first started. Before icing has time to occur. First AC run of the day.

I would also think that you losing the air flow from the vent is due to freezing. If this happens again before you get a chance to fix it, turn the blower on it's highest setting. Try to listen and notice if the fan sounds like it going super fast. Like when you plug the end of a shop vac hose. You hear the motor rev up a little cause it's working harder than normal.
