A/C "clunks" on '05
My '05 A/C unit really "Clunks" when I turn it on! I can actually feel it. I've got 14K miles on it at 1 year. Anyone else have this or suggestions before I take it in for service. I like to go in 'armed' so when I get the "We can't duplicate it..." line I can ask if they check... whatever.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
DHBGL...Both my '06 and my earlier '04 did/do this (loud quick grind or clunk or GRRP). Went to dealer I trust, and they said it's due to compressor parts being at the tolerance limits - and only fix would be to swap parts until they get some that aren't at the limits and don't make noise - but since the only issue is noise and no performance is affected, it'd not be warranty. They said not to worry - nothing would come of it. So after 65K on '04 I had to agree - nothing bad ever came of it. It never got better, and never got worse, and the AC worked like a champ. Then with the luck o' the Irish, my '06 had the same trait. So I live with it, and it also hasn't gotten worse or better. I was thinking I had the only two rams that ever did this - then just the other day saw a similar comment from Hiloram.
If you get a different story, let me - and Hiloram - know.

brian, I hate to say it but the dealer is blowin smoke.
the reason for the clunk is the compressor is more heavy duty than compressors of gassers. this is due to the diesel engine having the torque down low. it literaly snatches the parts around with virtualy no shock load on the engine but the compressor catches hell. I helped install an A/C compressor on a M1113 hummer(didnt know at the time it was the wrong one) when we fired up the compressor it was literaly puked out of the bottom of the engine. we found out later by running part numbers it was the wrong one.
mine has done this since day one, and does it still. it is just the nature of the beast, she's gunna snarl, buck, and make terrable noises, but she's running just fine
