I take it you are asking about fuel addatives. Power Service and Marvels Mystery Oil.
your 97 is good to run on the new ULSD fuel. the o-rings on the plungers in the P7100 pump and in the fuel line are different than those in I believe it was 95 that absorb some of the sulfur in the fuel. and when the transition to LSD happened these seals started to leak due to them drying out.
the main reason why many here run addatives is for fuel mileage increases. another is for lubrication, and last it will help keep carbon build-up from occuring. the newer fuels that are out right now are fairly dry when you compare them to fuels of previous years. when you remove sulfur from Diesel you also remove the lubricative properties. this is where MMO and Power Service comes into play. if you keep the injector pump lubricated, and the sealing surfaces of the injectors lubricated there will be less wear and tear on the components.
do you realy need to run addatives. not realy. however some of the things that push me to stay with them is the increased fuel mileage, my engine runs WAY smoother, and there is a slight power increase from Power Service since it raises the cetane value of the fuel.
there are no stupid questions, just ask away and someone will answer.
