Miles??
This is my first CTD and I was just wondering how many miles most of you would feel comfortable putting on a truck.. I usually trade every 1 to 1 1/2 years because I put about 53,000 a year... Since Cummins is such a good motor I've thought about keeping it a while but those miles will add up quick. If I keep the truck five years I will have about 265,000 on it and I was just wondering how many miles you guys would feel safe with. Most of my miles 80% are highway miles with very little pulling except for the weekends when I pull my boat..
If you put 50k a year I say keep it for at least 2.5-3 before thinking trade. If you trade any sooner you’ll lose $ plus with all the new emissions crap that is going on (all makes) the diesels I'd wait to see how that shakes out.
Besides at 50 to 100K its just gettin broke in. Mileage should be creepin north. Plus at 70K you should still expect to get close to $30K for your truck. 100-150K prob. around $25-27.
How great a feeling is that?! Getting $25-27K for a used truck with 140k miles on the odo!
Again it these trucks may be in even higher demand if they have troubles with the new motors and emission garb.
Just my $0.02

Remember that although the motor may be fine after hundreds of thousands of miles, the rest of the truck has the same parts as a gasser- the suspension, upholstery, tranny, door locks, etc., etc. - and they don't last nearly as long. So if you keep it for the life of the motor, plan on repairing or replacing a lot of the peripheral things. Most of the trucks I've had I traded in not because the motor died, but because I got tired of being nickel-dimed with things like electric door locks, seals, worn seats - you name it. And if you sell it yourself, you might get what Blkrm69 says - but when I went to trade in my fully-loaded '04 with 65K that I bought $4K under MSRP in the low forties then, the trade-in value was only in the low twenties. No matter what vehicle you have, it's a depreciating asset that is going to hurt if you can't find some poor bloke willing to pay Retail when you go to sell it.
Of course theres depreciation with any vehicle. But lucky for us, the diesels (regardless of package) resell for $28-30K (retail) with anywhere from 3K to 70K miles on it.
The trade in however is where the "stealer" gets there cake and eats it too.
1. Never take your trade with you. Use a buddies car
2. Dicker with the new truck until your happy with the price
3. Once all parties agree, get a quote.
4. Say you need some time (talk to wife- whatever) and leave
5. Come back with trade!
6. If they balk at the agreed price when they find out you got a trade then you know you have just met a true "stealer".
A good "dealer" wont even flinch.
If you walk in and have a trade you are really going to get burned. They will always try and low ball you on the trade anyways but if they know (about the trade) up front then there not going to go as low on the new truck.
Regardless you always want to know what they are going to sell your trade for. There is room in that $5-7K dif. from retail and trade in to negotiate.
Also you want to know what the invoice is. Dont always take the stealers word. Check Kellys Blue Book and Edmunds / NADA and compare with your sticker.
Either way our diesel is going to be worth alot more come trade in no matter how many miles we put on her!

I only put 5-600 on a week. Pretty easy though. I live in the sticks (beans and corn, beans and corn) and cummute. Only about 75 miles round trip but work 5-6 days a week and then on the 7th day I still wind up having to go to town for somethin.
Quiet though. Reminds me of when I was a kid. Durring the summer you can really take in a big deep breath of fresh country (cow) air.
I love it, drives my wife crazy...! [sm=lol.gif]

Yeah I put about 1000 week. I work for a consulting engineering firm in the upstate of South Carolina and travel about 180-190 miles a day not including weekends. Those miles add up quick.
Well, lets see. I am going to turn 417,000 on my 96 x-cab. I love every mile I put on, especially since I completed my homemade 4" straight exhaust with a 5" chrome turndown right in front of the right rear tire. Loud and proud is an understatement. It definately turns heads.
