Default Horsepower - It's insidious and now I have questions

Ok guys,

I've been reading everything about these "computer enhancements" and my head is swimming. What I have decided though is I really only want to do the basics i.e. improve towning or a little extra. No downloading or fuel pressure monkeying(for the most part).
What i've gathered so far is these look the most promising;
TST powermaxCR, Edge (EZ?), Quad XZT.

I'm looking for something thats minimally invasive and easy to remove.
Are there any I'm missing?
Do the control modules actually live under the hood?

I really dont even want to run the control switches into the cab and basically want a set it and forget it type of solution.
Besides, if I can't easily tweak it I'll pretty much leave it alone.

So are ya'll really seeing 1-2 mpg better? If so , it should pay for itself in about 30 tanks of fuel
See, you can justify anything if you try hard enough. [sm=badbadbad.gif]

What have I gotten myself into....

Oh, and thanks for all the help.

downloaders replace the programming in the PCM while boxes reside under the hood. the boxes are a snap to install & un-install and come in a variety of different setups.... all of them plug in between the pcm & the motor though. the edge ez is under the hood and allows you to set it & forget it with a dip switch. the TST powermax w/o the guages also has a controller that you can set and stash under the dash somewhere and forget it. it 's a tough choice, good luck with it... it's addicting.

BDTD is download and forget, but you can change the power levels if you want, and the reps at Bully Dog promised me that it leaves no tracks.

I still think I'll feel more comfortable with the boxes. What i get closer to end of warranty, I'll play more [sm=devilgrin.gif]

Anyone have experience with the TST EconoMax?

I havent read up on the econoMAX. might be something for me to do this afternoon.

TST standard programming will roast the 48RE and stock Holset turbo if you are not carefull. Steve even said the TST on 9/3 blew the edge box away, and he still has 6 more torque settings to play with. When it comes to adding power, the TST is the way to go.

my first MPG tank on my TST I set it to 1/1 and got 17.6mpg. this is in upper end of the range that I normaly get so it was nothing alarming. my last tank even though I only burned through half a tank before filling up I was on 2/2. This setting gave me 18.4mpg. This was alarming seeing as my best ever tank was 17.8. I am currently on 3/2 seeing what happens but so far so good.

maybe I have it backwards then... the TE setting... isnt that the torque? it was set to 9 while the power was at 3. Also the manual tells me that the TE setting has no effect until the power is 2 or higher. 17.6...oh man to dream of having 17.6 on the average... lol
18.4 mpg would be a dream...

TE is torque, the R39 that I have you just have to have the HP to 1 for the box to be on. I actualy tested 1/9, my clutch didnt like me alot.

rolling into it 8/8 will shut down traffic, I got some vid of the smoke this weekend, just didnt come out good[:@]

Was that this past sat? I thought it looked a bit dark south of us. Love to see the vid though

Not that I'm going that far but when you do have to modify the tranny (48RE ) what order do you end up doing things in. I know its really dependednt on the HP your going to throw but I have been reading and it seems to be these items but I havent quite gotten down pat the order of things (I guess the order of weakness....)

Valve body
TC
billet
bands
etc

Fortunately, my other obsessions keep this one in check.. for now

for mild power. . .around 100hp, upgradeing the valve body and torque converter is all you need. occasional ventures to 150hp will be ok. if under 75 horse increaseing line pressures will help things alot.

once you get over 475-500 horse, billet input and output shafts are needed. over 550 and a fully built tranny is required as the stock 48RE guts just will not handle that kind of power.

Drew you're a wealth of information. (glad you're here )

So like anything else on the truck, if we go tinkering with the valve body and torque converter,,,DC just throws the warranty away?

550 hp sigh, if only...
