Default Larger Turbo on '06 w/ Banks Kit?

My stepdad is asking me to research some stuff online for him. He has an '06 3500 Megacab with the 5.9 Cummins. He had the Banks Big Hoss kit put on it. Now he wants a larger turbo setup. A local shop is suggesting the BD Performance single turbo. Anyone running a similar setup? My concern is reliability on the drivetrain with this much power being added. Any ideas on how well this would work? Any issues going larger on the turbo with the Banks kit? Thanks!

my first question would be how much power is he putting to the ground. if 375-425, the a SPS 64 would be good, if over 425 then the sps66. another good turbo would be the aurora 2000 for under 425, over 450 you would need the 5000. of over 500 then the silver bullet from industrial injection.

you need to make sure you pick the right turbo for the power he has, to small a turbo and the egt's will be insane, and the same way if the turbo is too big, plus it will be very laggy and surge alot.

if over 550 twins are in order.

Thanks! He hasn't been on a dyno yet. I guess that would be the next step. Any recommended tuners in North Carolina? The shop that did his Banks install isn't a great place for this sort of thing.

dont forget the tranny... auto's need minimum valve body & torque converter, optional at this point...billet shafts, a HP rebuild kit, and a flex plate... depends on how far he wants to go.

for a slushbox... upgraded clutch & pressure plate.

I know this post is off from the original subject but it should be brought up...

All very good points and why I wanted to find a good tuner, not this shop that does some work on the side. My performance experience is all on gas engine cars. My little Jeep Liberty CRD is my first diesel. But, knowing how much power the truck is putting down would lead me to believe the rest of the drivetrain is going to need work should he keep upgrading. That's especially true with the fact he uses this for towing a good bit. I'm in the camp of "reliable power". I believe his tow vehicle should be very reliable. I'm not sure it's a good idea to go above the Banks kit he has now without sacrificing some of that.

yup, as the saying goes... "the brighter the bulb, the sooner it burns out" I think the same applys to performance motors...

I think the key is to build it up so the power is available when you want it, as in programmer or perf. box, so you can turn it up as needed. should be a good compramise of the 2.

the tranny does need some work if he's wanting to put down some good power.

where in NC are you located. I know theres a few diesel shops near Greenville SC cant think of who off the top of my head. You have Jeff Garmon's shop, he specializes in high performance, then for suspension work you have Preston Thompson of Turbo's(his link is in my siggy if he needs suspension work) both are near me.
